Salt lamp?!!!

In the last couple of months people ( well meaning I think) have been telling us that the lamps marketed as Himalayan salt lamps would help with air quality.

What does everyone think, don't want well meaning family to give as gift if just a fad

Pete didn’t find the salt lamp or pipe to be beneficial but everyone’s different. Air quality can be improved by certain plants so that may be worth investigating. Good luck. Xxxx

Didn't do anything for me

I find it gives off a nice soft relaxing kind of light which I like, but I haven't noticed any other effect to be honest.

I know people who think they really help - mine just gives off a warm glow. Maybe they help with some lung conditions but not others.

there are clinisc in some European states based in old salt mines there. there are beds and you stay there.

I think it was Poland. There are alot of alsold salt mines in poland including one that has been developed for entertainment !

I believe there is a "salt cave" in London for medical treatments.

I wondered about a salt pipe that is advertised but never got convinced enough to buy one.

I have had 2. They give a lovely warm glow but I unplugged both mine as I found they were attracting water which with electricity was dangerous.

Have read recently that they may be quite harmful to pets. Please, does anyone know whether this is so?

Hi Judith, salt lamps are only harmful to pets if they lick them. The answer is to place them where they can’t be reached.

Didnt help me lamp and pipe i also tried salt room i couldnt afford it but i went as thought it would help it didnt help at all

Also if you have animals, do not let them lick them. Those large lumps of rock are incredibly tempting for cats to lick, which can lead to sodium poisoning, which can cause pain, vomiting, seizures, and even death.

I've tried the salt lamp and the salt pipe with no great benefit. However, I know someone else who swears she gets improvement from both. I don't know if she's got better quality ones or whether it's a case of mind over matter. xx Moy

My salt pipe and salt lamp help me when I have a cold. It seems to ease the symptoms.

I have a salt lamp, I suppose it must be absorbing something - the glow is pretty. Also, I have an Asparagus Fern in another room which is supposed to clean the air. Of the two I think the Fern is the most effective.

So many folk with this illness (COPD Emphysema) sing the praises of salt lamps and therapy and pipes BUTfor me they are very dangerous. During a Hopital stay I was tried with a nebulizer using saline and nurse was shocked to discover my beathinhg ability wa further educed by 25%. Saline/salt was replaced by salbotamol which was fine. So do beware and get it checked by a respiratory team that salt suits you.
