I am thinking of having a salt lamp , i have an air purifer but it doesn’t stop smells. I find smells from cooking etc affect me sometimes, i do open windows but rather cold at mo to have them open for too long.

Do any of you friends use a salt lamp? Are they beneficial especially with copd. ?

I do have salt lamps but they don't get rid of odours that I have notice, but then I don't do cooking that creates a lot of after odour.

I do like the salt lamps though - himalayan salt lamps. I wouldn't know what its like without them I've had them for so long and on all waking hours. Although I have noticed when I am waiting on a replacement bulb the air quality doesn't seem so good.

When I have had odour in the past I had a plug in socket ionizer, those you need to understand should not be used regularly as they generate ozone, which can impact on the lungs. However I have used it for 30 mins at a time when out of the room. its something you need to research properly to be aware of the safe use of same.

If you check on you tube odour eliminators, for those living in the US the lady explains;

Thank you for the info. Yes i don’t use an ionizer as i know its not good to breathe in the ozone it creates. I will do some research before i decide to use salt lamp. Need something safe and effective. More so while we are confined to indoors so much at the mo.

If you have the funds for air purification the Dyson is the best but there are other cheaper options.

Thanks for that. I didn't realise ionisers were bad for your lungs. We've been happily using one for years. Oops!

Yes, i used to have one, then i researched and found that ionisers arent good for copd etc, so i bought an air purifier with hepa filter instead. brilliant. The ozone you get from the sea is a bit different. Build up of seaweed gives off that awful smell, but sea air is beneficial. I have a 2nd home in spain ( when i’m allowed to go, thank you covid!!), and the sea air is very good, i feel much better.

Stay safe.

I use a salt lamp, it's gives off a lovely soft light which is restful to the eyes and that's about it. 🙂

Thanks for reply. So does it not help the air in the room and breathing?

in reply toCollie4

Not for me, I don’t see how it possibly could.

It would seem to me that nothing healthful to the lungs can be expected to come out of a salt lamp or ionizer.

Thank you for your reply. I was doubtful about salt lamps. I don’t think i will bother.

I think the salt lamps are ugly and dont do anything for COPD. I have a humidifier which changes colour and I put few drops of lavender essential oil which smells beautiful and also is great for COPD and eliminates odours. I sometimes put a few drops of Olbas Oil which is a great decongestant. This moistens the air as lets of puffs of steam . My Himalayan lamp is in a cupboard as didnt do anything. Its so heavy best out of site. Get an Innogear humidifier from Amazon. Apparently a nurse in America reckons it saved her life from Covid-19. They now use them on the wards for covid-19 patients in her hospital. Dont know if this is true but I love mine, leave it on throughout night as it acts as a night light also. xxSheila 🙌💕

Thank you for the reply. I am becoming convinced not to use a salt lamp. I will try the innogear humidifier you mentioned. It doesn’t emit ozone and not an ioniser?

Innogear cool mist humidifier .love mine .you can use any essential oil you choose. Lavender is great and soothing. Olbas oil really great to clear stuffy nose. Good luck. xxSheila 🙌

Hi Collie... I have a salt lamp... My partner did some research and yes its believed that they have benefits for people with COPD... Too be honest I don't know if it has helped but I do love the warm light it gives off... I find it calming... So maybe in that respect it does help... I don't know if it helps with cooking smells tho... Not much help I know... My apologies x

Thank you for reply. Yes, i’m going to give it a try i think. You don’t know til you try things. Stay safe.

Salt lamps not to be confused with Salt pipe and salt caves which are beneficial for breathing /lung issues. But that is something else to research if you are so inclined to do. However these will not get get of your smells which is what I thought you had wanted to achieve. See video information I posted above if that is still your interest. Good luck.

Yes, i want to eliminate cooking smells but also need something to make the air clear that’s safe with copd. I will do some research and look at link you sent, thank you.

Definitely worth watching the video right through, it covers most all the options, some will not be available in UK but some are.

Hello Collie, I have severe COPD & started going once a week to a Salt Cave for a 1-hour salt therapy treatment around fifteen months ago,. Since then I have only had 1 exacerbation compared to 4-6 a year before. We have also purchased Himalayan salt lamps for the Lounge, Study & Bedroom which have helped compensate for not being able to regularly attend the salt cave this year due to the Covid lockdown restrictions & I’m sure have helped keeping my exacerbation at bay.Hope this information helps. stay safe, Peter

Ah, thank you for replying. There are fors and againsts with salt lamps. I was sceptical but maybe i would benefit. It’s worth a try, even though some people say they have no benefit. Thank you. Stay safe.

Please check with your medical support team that salt is not going to be detrimental to your condition. To my surprise when tested for salt in a nebulizer in Hospital it was found to further reduce my breathing capacity by 23%

Thank you. Yes, it did cross my mind about it having adverse effect. I have a telephone appointment next week with my nurse, so i will ask her.

We have had a salt lamp for years just because we like it , not sure if it has been beneficial in any way , certainly can’t say I’ve noticed a difference in cooking smells but then we have an extractor fan and a Dyson purifier so hard to say What I did want to point out though is that they are toxic to cats ( particularly) and dogs . I only found this out recently and I have two dogs! Fortunately they never bother with the lamp , I think they have to lick them to be affected but cats apparently are attracted to them and can suffer fits - which actually happened with my friends cat . Fortunately the cat survived but apparently they can be lethal 😳

Oh, thank you for the info , i have both cat and dog. If i do have a salt lamp i will make sure it’s not in their reach. When i was reading up about them i read something about them not being good for animals.
