Build up of phlegm

I have copd 2 and type 2 diabetes and have been getting a lot of mucus stuck in my throat and runny feeling nose and what my husband calls 'a bubbly sounding noise in nose' and the odd cough. My gp has just done a blood test and had a spirometry test today to see if I have whooping cough. Very confusing.

Hello Gillian,

I wish I could advise you. I read that whooping cough in adults can sometimes be detected by doctors just listening to the cough and asking questions. Did your doctor take a throat swab or send you for an xray? My daughter had whooping cough when she was 2 years old and I will never forget the awful cough and the length of time each spasm lasted and how exhausted she was after each bout. I do hope it isn't whooping cough, and also that you feel better very soon.

No just a pertussis blood test and spyrometry test. Wheezing and leaves me gasping for breath, not coughing a lot though. Will let you know tomorrow.

Try to get some sleep tonight, and prop yourself up.

night night.

This is how I get when I have an infection. I use a cough medicine and nasal spray. Don't ignore it. That raspy sound is congestion. You will also need an antibiotic and prednisone. Do you use a sleep apnea machine?

The sleep apnea machine with oxygen is very helpful.

You could talk to the GP about Carbocisteine to thin the mucus or a Flutter device to help clear the mucus. Don't know, just thought they might help

I was given carbocisteine as I have permanent mucus running down the back of my throat, it collects in my throat and chest and will not shift, I am coughing my heart up and fighting for breath and still can't shift it. however, I only took one of the pills and within an hour I was so ill, vomiting, rash and felt so ill, obviously they didn't agree with me. Now I have been given ERDOTIN and I am tolerating them. Just returned from the hospital this morning after having a CT chest scan, I so hope they can find the cause of this year long cough and why I am fighting for breath all the time and nothing seems to help. Ordinary xray last sept of lungs showed nothing, but there is definitely something wrong.

trouble is half the gunk sputum is to thick to get up out of the lungs carbocisteine helps brake it up you could try tipping yourself but get a couple of sputum pots to spit the sputum into only tip for halve an hour then sit up slowly

Hi, sorry to jump in here but can you explain to me what a flutter device is and how it works?

A simple plastic/metal device that causes a vibration of the chest to release the mucus - a description here allergan.com/assets/pdf/flu...

Cost around £50 - SOME areas (UK) are available on prescription

Hope it helps
