Hello I have just got over my third cold this winter and have had a very bad cough. For the last few days there has been blood in my phlegm mainly mornings and always fresh blood. I do have asthma but that's not been too bad . I am 64 . Otherwise I am feeling fine now.

Coughing up blood in phlegm

please go to the doctors and get it checked, it will put your mind at rest.please keep in touch and let us know how you are.xxx😊 Bernadette 😊
Hi Lyndel, its most probably that you have burst a blood vessel with all your coughing. but as Damon suggested best go to the doctors to get it checked out. The fact that the blood is very red is also a sign that that is the problem, there is no treatment if that is the case, as it will heal on its own. But always better safe than sorry

A very warm welcome to the forum Lyndel. Sorry to hear you've had a bad winter healthwise. As we're not doctors here, we can't give you a diagnosis.
My advice would be to go to your GP & get checked out. Maybe take along a sputum sample.
Hope all is well with you. Do come back & let us know how you get on.
Take care 🌺
Hi with a very bad cough it is very common for a small blood vessel in your throat to break and it happens to me. As long as it's only a bit there shouldn't be a problem. It's good it's fresh blood and not the darker red one. If you are worried get it checked out just in case. x
Happened to me after a massive coughing episode (choked on a crumb of biscuit!) but "bright" bleeds are seldom sinister though, as has been said, always best to get it checked out for your own peace of mind.
My husband coughs up blood in varying amounts and colours every time he has a chest infection. He has copd and chf. When you look it up, coughing blood seems a fairly normal part of exacerbations although our doc says it's never normal. So he's just had another xray.
CHILL OUT **** TAKE IT EASY AND SEE A DOCTOR NOW ****xxxx
Smoked till he was 30, which was 45 years ago. Since the xray he was referred to oncologist and now has Bronchoscopy and ct scan booked. But told nothing particularly sinister on xray.
