Bisoprolol/ vivid dreams

Been taking Bisoprolol 2.5mg for 12 months now. I have experienced vivid dreams since taking them, resulting in broken nights sleep/tiredness. This has had a knock on effect with my migraines.

I have an appointment to see my GP in a week, to hopefully get a resolution.

of the medicines that get talked about here, bisoprolol seems to get the most mentions. If you put that term into the search box above left, and choose “my communities “ on the right, you can scroll through lots of posts and their responses.

Anyway, there are many alternative medications depending on your particular circumstances. If you get the opportunity, have a word with the pharmacy employed by your doctor’s group of surgeries and that person is well placed to advise your doctor.

Yes . I was on on this horrible drug along with doubling my statin and Ranolazine . BP and pulse dropped to dangerous levels and nightmares. Stopped taking it after 7 weeks and feel very well.

You are not alone , I have suffered horrific nightmares for over 6 years & my cardiologist is reluctant/dead against trying an alternative. So I'm mulling over weaning myself off Bisoprolol, I've had enough now & trust my Pacemaker will protect me. I even disturb my sleeping wife who thinks I'm having a heart issue! Best wishes on finding a solution yourself.

I wonder if there is some ingredient in the make up of anti-arrythmics or beta blockers or even a natural reaction that causes this in some individuals. I had some pretty horrific nightmares on Amiodorone years ago and now on Sotolol, not so bad but with some very vivid dreams nonetheless.

I consider it a small price to pay for a regular rhythm though.

yes I get vivid dreams. Had some last night. Can be very scary. I wake up screaming. With the scariness of the nightmares

Same with me, I have been on Bisoprolol for a year now to treat persistent AF and I started getting very vivid dreams and usually during the time I am in the REM phase of sleep (my Apple watch helped with this data). A lot of the time though these are not nice vivid dreams about winning the lottery or being on a nice beach somewhere they are horrible nightmares that apart from giving me broken sleep they also leave me feeling very odd the following day as they are so vivid to almost seem like reality. This drug certainly triggers a part of the brain that goes into overload on thoughts. I find that stress and anxiety play a large part on the occurrence and severity of the dreams, when they occur I do breathing exercises as that helps to stabilise things and hopefully get back to calmer sleep.

You are not alone in the effect it is having on you and of the many posts I have read it would seem bisoprolol is not well liked (including by me). I hope you get a resolution.

Unfortunately this is one of the known side effects of Bisoprolol and other beta-blockersIf you take it in the evening you could try taking it in the morning or, as others suggest, ask you doctor about an alternative

Do speak with your pharmacist/GP/Cardiologist. I was on bisoprolol for approx 12 years after a stent. I too had vivid dreams plus more importantly a feeling of a thick head and lethargy on many days. I just put up with it. However last year saw a Cardiologist again and went through various symptoms. Straight away he said he knew what was the cause of symptoms described above. He replaced the bisoprolol. Not saying everthing is perfect. I am still awaiting further follow up. However the vivid dreams are better and for me the thick head and lethargy is certainly much better.

Seeing my GP next week 👍I was put on bisoprolol a year after a stent. Problem is I suffer also with migraines and some of the bad dreams have triggered an attack! Not sure I can put up with it much longer as migraines can last several days!! Hoping GP can offer an alternative

I take mine in the morning rather than at night which has eased the problem
