Hi all. I'm new here so I hope you are all feeling as well as you can be. Just wondering if there is anyone here that has to use Fragmin, (Anti Clotting) Injection, as well as the Warfarin occasionally and, more importantly, how does it make you feel. Thank you 😊

I was given heparin for 2 days right after my open heart surgery (as it takes a while for the warfarin to ramp up). I don't know whether it was UFH or LMWH (Fragmin, etc.).

It's hard to say how it made me feel because coming out of surgery I pretty much felt like I'd been hit by a bus.

I've been on just warfarin since then, and it gives me no side effects.

Thanks for your reply. I have to admit that I really don't like Fragmin but know I have to do the Injections to keep me Safe! I have to inject them into my Stomach and the bruising is awful and end up with a lot of little haematomas there for weeks. My INR is very irregular, this is why I have to use the Fragmin! Other times I have to have Vitimin K in the Mouth. I was in Hospital approx. 6 weeks ago and they put me on Heparin on a Machine. I didn't mind that so much!! I know what you mean about coming 'Out of Surgery', I felt exactly the same as you did. Feel so much better now though so it was ALL worth it!

That sounds like no fun. I'm very sensitive to warfarin (it only takes 2mg/day to get me to my target INR of 2.5), but fortunately my INR stays fairly stable.

It's very rarely I'm within my INR RangeI go to the Doctor's Surgery, every Week, sometimes more per Week and, whatever they do, it settles for a few days maybe, and then off we go again lol 😆

Yeah it does. It's really not the best at all. I've just come back from Doctor's, so have to wait now for the Hospital to ring later to see what Results were today. Hope to God, I haven't got to use it this again this Week!! Thanks for your Reply, was beginning to think it was just me lol 😆

I was on warfarin and Fragmin in 2019 and on warfarin and Enoxaparin just a couple of weeks ago. I had a procedure on 10th March which meant I had to come off warfarin for 5 days and you can't do that without heparin cover if you have a mechanical heart valve, hence the Exnoaxaparin. Neither Fragmin or Enoxaparin made me feel any differently, but both sting like a bee and as my INR came up it left terrible bruises on my stomach. It was OK at first when my INR was at or around 1.0, but as it approached my target of 2.5, the bruises really kicked in and I still have bruises now from the last four injections. Nobody likes using them, but they are unfortunately a necessary evil at times.

Sorry for long delay in answering you, had a very busy day. Oh yes, the Bruising is horrendous, seems to spread all over my Stomach and it is BLACK!! The Hospital haven't rung me today with my Result so that is usually a good sign 🙂. So, will just take the normal Warfarin tonight now and cross my fingers that they don't Phone early in the morning to go back there, again. I can't change to another Blood Thinner as I have two Mechanical Heart Valves and it is only Warfarin that is approved. That is what the Surgeon advised for me and I really wasn't going to upset him, know what I mean lol 😆 Anyway, thanks for replying and Stay Well.

Talk to your doctor about xeralto or Eliquis for your anticoagulant needs. These are pills instead of injections. I take xeralto 20 mg pill once a day. I have been taking xeralto for 8 yrs. no side affects and no blood clots. Was taking warfarin in the beginning but my gfr (kidney performance) was declining. After I switched to xeralto, kidneys bounced back to gfr of 90.Stay strong, you have a long life ahead!!!

Hi. Thanks for replying and the suggestion. As I just said above, it is only Warfarin I can take as I have two Mechanical Valves and it is only Warfarin that is approved for Valves so, there we go, it is what it is really. It does take it's toll sometimes but know I have to do it.

Hello,

I have Enoxaparin injections everytime I am in hospital. I have been admitted to hospital about 20 times for about 10 days each time.

I am sent home with 5 days supply.

So alot of Enoxaparin injections to endure.

I have learned to give the injections without too much pain or bruising myself.

I usually use my stomach. I take a pinch of flesh, between my thumb and forefinger.

I slowly push the needle in, keeping it straight not at an angle.

Then, I slowly push the syringe plunger in and slowly withdraw the needle.

I do not rub or touch the injection site afterwards.

Wow - 20 times??? That's a lot Milkfairy! Like you though, I am getting a bit better with the Injections. Still don't like them but that's the way it is. I had to go into Hospital as my Range had shot up to 7 point something. Nurse said, you should only be in there for a couple of hours or so, I was there 13 days!! Thank you for replying.

yes, I have to quite frequently due to having the Warfarin slowly withdrawn and Fragmin injection’s introduced, then withdrawn and Warfarin reintroduced over a matter of weeks. This I have to go through approximately every three to four months due to my having to have regular pain injections in my spine. I have to inject myself directly into my stomach and I do suffer quite a lot of bruising.

I’ve got so used to it now and it doesn’t have any effects on me. and I feel perfectly OK. The worse was at first having to inject myself but I soon got over that and think nothing of injecting myself now.

I'm sorry to hear what you're going through along with the Warfarin but happy you're used to it now. I've got used to it but I have to admit I hate all the bruising and it seems to last for weeks. What can we do though? It's keeping us alive and safe. Good News, the Hospital haven't phoned me yet from having the INR yesterday so that SHOULD mean it might be in Range. Thank you for your Reply. Very appreciated.

I’m used to the bruising, especially when I have an INR test, that it doesn’t bother me anymore. It’s a small price to pay.
