Anxiety turned into HBP

Hi

I recently went to the doctors with anxiety and came out with blood pressure pills and anxiety tablets. I’m on day 4 of Amlodipine and the side effects are quite bad, is this normal? I haven’t taken the anxiety tablets again as I don’t know what is causing my issues. Dizziness, chest pain and a very sore knee. Such a strange sensation, will it settle down? Thanks.

well I’m sure - as you are too - a sore knee hasn’t anything to do with your medication! It’s important to keep your blood pressure under control and it does sometimes take a few weeks for the side effects, if any, to settle. Let your body get used to the pills.

So that you feel more in control of things I’d recommend you visit the website of Blood Pressure UK, the specialist charity. Following their advice on diet and lifestyle might help.

thank you. My knee and foot became sore on dose 3, I could feel a strange sensation going down my legs. As you say, give it time. There’s lovely people on here a lot worse than me, I just wondered did anyone else have issues with the tablets. Also, I’ve stopped my supplements, that doesn’t help. I used to take fish oils and vitamins. It’s just all new.

Hello Babsiom, I was prescribed Amlodipine for high blood pressure several months ago. Within a few days, my ankles, especially the left one, became very swollen. I understand this can be a side effect of Amlopidine! The pills did nothing to lower my BP. I persuaded the doctor to change my medication so he put me on Losartan. The ankle swelling got better within days, but I have had to increase the dose to 75 mg and even now, my BP is still too high most days! Sometimes I will get strange sensations in my lower legs, burning, tingling, etc. The doctor put me on statins, so I blamed them for the weird legs. I stopped taking them for about three weeks, but my strange legs didn’t seem any better. I have just re-started the statins!

So sorry, I hope you get sorted soon. It’s a shock having to start medication and then change.

HI babsiom, yes leg and ankle pain is normal at first with amilodipine, if it continues tell GP .

dizziness and chest pain from anxiety, more than likely, try some breathing exercises for relaxation, calm app or headspace see if it helps

Amlodipine does take a while to get used to. The dizziness could be caused by the anxiety meds tho.

hi Babisiom, so sorry your going through this - I think with any tablets some suit some, some don’t I take amlodipine and have been fine on them been on them a number of years when I first started on them I remember looking out for swollen ankles but I was fine, so think I was lucky with these tablets -see how you go on but I started Bisoprolol two weeks ago and after three days had to stop so again I come back to not all meds suit us all take care hope you get sorted soon 😊

Thank you so much, it’s lovely to know that not everything suits everybody, they have me down as a worrier. I had a scare to begin with and there are no doctors here available to talk to. It takes weeks for an appointment. My son lives in Liverpool and they are wonderful there, the doctor is on hand to discuss any issues.
