Bisoprolol for HBP and Anxiety

Well I thought I was there - Controlled my BP with Ramipril and Amlodipine but now due to some side effects my GP has stopped the Amlodipine and replaced it with Bisoprolol.

Anyone got experience of Beta Blockers for HBP? It may suit me as I also suffer from Anxiety but interested in any views. I start tomorrow.

I'm open minded to this drug as I'm really pleased not to have blood pressure of 200/120 anymore (now averaging 120/76), so feeling positive. In the last 14 weeks I've lost 2 stones (from 16 stone to 14 stone), exercising, eating healthily and feel fitter than I have for may years, so being treated for HBP has it's advantages. I'm smiling and hope you all are too.

Keep well and positive everyone and thank you for the support and advice you have given me over the last three months.

Andrew

Sounds as if you are doing really well. Congrats. Perhaps the healthy eating and exercise are factors! I'm on a high dose of bisoprolol and ok with it. All the best to you.

Thank you. The lifestyle changes certainly have helped and I shall continue. Another stone to go I think. Andrew

I take this since bypass and so far so good. BP readings are similar to yours.

Learn to get up slowly, just a pause when upright, Your lower BP may make you a little dizzy,

Thank you - I shall bear this in mind. Andrew

Beta-blockers work by reducing the affects adrenaline has on your heart, slowing it down, which in turn lowers your BP. Basically, your heart doesn't have to work so hard anymore. However, this can make you quite tired. I was put on 1 a day after my MIs and 3 years later I just couldn't take the lethargy anymore, so my GP moved me down to half a tablet.

Thank you - we shall see what it does!

I have been taking bisoprolol 1.25mg twice/day for 3 years following MV repair. No side effects keeping active, gym twice/week, bowling outdoors and indoors. I’ll be 81 in a couple of weeks. Keep up the healthy eating, get plenty of exercise, don’t worry anf live life to the full

Thank you for replying. I shall give it a go!

I'm not sure what the side effects were, but I found out the hard way that not all amlodipine generics are the same. Were any of your side effects possibly caused by switching generics?

in reply tovalspia

Hi, I just generally felt unwell on Amlodipine. I took it at night, 10 mg, and my bp was raised in the morning (up to 150/95) , I was shaky and unable to function until around 10 am. funny thing is when I was seen by a paramedic 8 weeks ago he advised a beta blocker. So we shall see. Ramipril, despite some reviews which I take in the morning has an immediate calming effect and my BP is certainly controlled to 115/75. Andrew

Glad it's working for you now. I take a beta blocker along with about 4 other meds for high bp. Finding the right combination that works certainly helps with the anxiety 😀

in reply tovalspia

Thank you. We shall see start the Beta blocker tomorrow. I hope you are well and it does seem like guess work to get the right combination. Here's hoping this is my last medication change. Thank you for taking the time to reply.. it has been an anxious time and your reply has meant so much to me. Andrew
