Hello

I suffered Arterial Fibrillation as a result of gastroenteritis. spent 3 days in hospital and put on meds to bring down rate and to keep taking them as a precaution. Apixaban digoxin and Bisoprolol, I am feeling utterly dreadful , chest tightness , feeling can't get a breath no strength etc. I am 81 but did not feel this way before. I am thinking its the Bisoprolol, can anyone give me their take on this please?

GP no help.

Hello. I was put on Bisoprolol and statins doubles from 20 - 40 mg. I immediately felt terrible. Lots of side effects. Crazy nightmares. After 7 weeks could not walk, could not wake up.

I reduced statins back to 20 mg and reduced Bisoprolol by taking one every other night for a week. Felt back to normal after a week, but took 2-3 weeks to regain correct walking.

Hello Piotr2025, hope you don’t mind me jumping on here I’ve recently been put on atorvastatin 20mg along with Bisoprolol 1.25mg only started them on Monday so I know early days but HR was slow last night hardly slept - I too have had let’s say weird dreams also headaches since the statins but because I’ve only been on them a month thought I would persist with them just in case it evens itself out but thought I sounded similar to you hope it all sorts itself out for you now think sometimes you have to find your own regime that works for you take care 😊

Thank you .🙏 l was on 20 mg Atorvastin for 2 years with no problems. When upped to 40 mg my legs seized up . But l think the Bisoprolol causes the dreams. I managed to come off it quickly over a week and no problems.

I am back to “normal” !

But on Monday l had a CT scan and given a beta blocker . Still got a thumping headache and a bizarre dream last night!

Really hoping l can just stick with Atorvastin .

Take care

Hi, I was put on Bisoprolol for ectopic heartbeats. 2.5 then increased by 1.5. I started having terrible nightmares so bad that I had to sleep with the light on and was deeply disturbed. I weaned myself off it altogether and the nightmares stopped.

hi, sorry to hear you are feeling so unwell. I developed AF after suffering a NSTEMI and was put on bisoprolol daily dose. I felt awful similar to you. GP reduced dose but even on 1.25 mg felt dreadful and made heart rate too low. I now use bisoprol only as pill in pocket so take at start of AF episode which works really well for me.

hello Valentine7, sorry to hear you are having a tough time I’ve literally just been put on bisoprolol 1.25mg - saw my GP on Monday to be honest I’m not sure what medication is the best, started with ectopics last July, I was already on sotolol from SVT but from many years previous but going through this the ectopics were making my heart rate drop so feeling uncomfortable, had all the usual tests which were fine but the holter did detect bradycardia so cardiology discharged me back to my GP but asked me to increase the sotolol I was shocked to see that as it can make your HR slow but I tried the regime they asked me to do felt dreadful - two days of the bisoprolol I felt okish during the day but tried to sleep last night and the ectopics were there all the time and my pulse was slow, I feel so fed up just want some respite from this I see the GP again in two weeks, so I’m a newbie obviously to this medication and I’m sorry not really offering any advice just wanted to let you know as yet can’t say I feel any different but hope you start to feel better soon has your Afib been ok now after your gastro has got better? Take care 😊

Like some others, unfortunately I can only tell you of my experience – following several episodes of AFib, I have been on Bisoprolol, Apixaban and Digoxin daily since September 2024.

Started at 1.25mg Biso but now on 10mg; Apixaban also 10mg, Digoxin 0.125mcg.

In November 2024 Amiodorane 200mg once daily was added to this cocktail.

I always suffered dizzy spells as a side effect (of the biso?) but these worsened once Amiodorane was added. Surgeon in December did not want to alter dosages as too soon after heart surgery (mitral valve replacement).

In January 2025 20mg Atorvasatin was added but when I read the leaflet it said it could affect/be affected by Digoxin and Amidorane so I stopped it. Nothing has been suggested to replace it.

Just over a week ago the GP told me to stop the Digoxin. HR seems to remain same, still get dizzy spells – vary from day to day, cannot work out if its one or other of the drugs, or the combination.

GP no real help. Understandably, they have limited cardio knowledge, but can perhaps seek it?

Now have to wait till see surgeon 20 March and cardiologist 27 March following echocardiogram.

I would love to come off/reduce one of the cocktail to return to something like normal life, although scared AF will return.

All this to say my main side effect of the Biso (plus others??) has been the dizzy spells and perhaps some tiredness.

Sounds as if you will have to persist with GP and/or seek another opinion?

hello!

Sorry to hear you’re unwell. I couldn’t tolerate the bisoprolol and had these same symptoms! Felt absolutely dreadful on it, back on my atenolol now and feeling much more comfortable!

I hope you get sorted soon x

Your symptoms could be from bisoprolol but could also be from continuing A Fib. An electric cardioversion or an ablation procedure may help rid you of A Fib but your cardiologist wants to protect you from clots in your heart by keeping you anticoagulated for 3 weeks before your having any of those procedures. Nevertheless you should inform him/her of your symptoms
