induction hobs and pacemaker

pacemaker admission this Friday but we have an induction hob and cooking is important to me as my partner already has too much domestic stuff to do. Don’t want to remodel the kitchen so what to do? Does anyone use one of those portable ceramic hobs and are they any good?

Yes , I have used induction with no problems. Just be conscious not to get too close. I think other electricals eg mobile phone etc that you use casually are more likely to get close and I know I've had to remember that, but my ICD (similar) has never blipped as a consequence! It's the usual very precautionary risk management. I'm refitting a kitchen and would have chosen to refit with an induction hob but unfortunately don't have the power cabling to do it so will reluctantly be on gas.

Ceramic hobs btw are not the same issue as induction hobs because they don't use a magnet which is the issue. Any strong magnet or electro magnet field can be a problem if placed close (15cms/6in) to the heart with a pacemaker or ICD.

I had a CRT-Pacemaker fitted before Christmas and have had no problems using an induction hob. Must admit that was the first question I asked my cardiologist. His reply was 'no problem - just don't lie on top of it'!

thanks for your question. I’m going in for an icd in march.

By what I read both pacemakers and icds are affected my magnets, mobile phone smart watches induction hobs and microwaves all should be used with caution.

Any other advice is much appreciated.

Hi I was having a new kitchen when I had to have an ICD. I was advised not to have an induction hob so opted for a ceramic electric one. In the ICD booklet it states that you have to stay at an arm's length from induction hobs. You should be able to find a ceramic hob the same size as your induction one so wouldn't necessarily have to reconfigure the kitchen.

Suggest you discuss with your pacemaker team when you get fitted on Friday. They will be able to give you the correct advice that goes with the device you are having fitted.
