stents and induction hobs

Are there any medical experts on these communities? I see a lot of opinions from non qualified commentators. I am repeating an earlier question about stents and induction hobs. But would welcome an expert/qualified input.

I think most of us in this forum have experience and do not give any advice on medication or how to treat conditions most of us will advise each other to see their gp or cardiologist to help and give proper diagnosis and treatment

Thanks. I didn't know what to expect. I was hoping there were professionals who could provide guidance. This seems more like a support group. I'll look elsewhere. Your response is helpful.

You can always ring the BHF helpline and speak to a medical professional. I found that to be really helpful in the past.

Correct this is indeed a support group.

Notwithstanding, an induction hob transfers electrical energy by induction from a coil of wire into a metal vessel that must be ferromagnetic. The coil is mounted under the cooking surface, and a high frequency (e.g. 24 kHz) alternating current is passed through it. The current in the coil creates a dynamic magnetic field. It is the magnetic field that is a problem if you have a pacemaker or an ICD implanted . Stents are either made of stainless steel or cobalt alloy metal and as they're non magnetic the hob cannot have any effect on a stent

in reply to SpiritoftheFloyd

Don't do it. If you're not medically qualified, say nothing.

Hi Clive. If you want a professional opinion then you should talk to your doctor or a cardio nurse. You could call the BHF nurses: 0300 330 3311. But the advice below is correct in my non medical opinion.

Yes. I know now that I'm in the wrong place.

I had a stent fitted last year and have an induction hob. I cook a lot from scratch so the hob is well used and I’m still here. Not medically qualified to answer though.

At 62 I’m a qualified and expert but imperfect human being. As such I’d say that human experience shows induction hobs are fine or we would know about it by now since stents have been used since the 1970s 😀 when I say that induction hobs are fine, they are, except for cooking 🤣 I can never work them out.

I have stents and an induction hob. What would be your issue?

Do you want someone who is qualified in electrical engineering AND a cardiologist? Don’t think we have one of those. 😀

This is a great explanation. 😂

A typical scrapyard magnet that picks up old Audis is about 1T so stents should be fine but ICDs are a no-no!

While Yasyass's reply has some merit if you have good medical staff to turn to. However, there are nuances on this forum. We all have different levels (in different cardiac areas) of experience. We also have different levels of research abilities (google is not a monster if you research good health sites). To extol the all knowingness of cardiac professionals is not always correct. I applaud (of hospital Drs in general) "Sometimes we just guess." Of course those guesses come from experience which should of course be respected, however most have not undergone surgery or taken the medications - which folk on this forum have and on this score sharing experiences is invaluable and no doubt will help many to achieve better outcomes after surgery.
