I took Rosuvastatin 5mg for the very first time two days ago and developed a headache that won’t go away. It’s also causing hand tenderness and ear pain. Is this normal with just taking the first dose? I haven’t took any more since the first dose.

If you believe you are suffering from side effects from any medication you take that is affecting your quality of life you should discuss with your prescribing health professional e.g. your GP. As for statins there are several to try and they may not come with the same side effects and they might be tolerated. However if you turn out to be statin intolerant there is other medication available to manage your cholesterol.
I take 20 mg but don't recall getting any aches or pains from it.
Whereas I used to take 5 mgs and I got the headaches just like the original poster. We're all different with different tolerances.
After trying almost every statin made because of bad side effects, I was referred to hospital and put onto rosuvastatin. Side effects were not too bad, but knowing this one was almost a last resort this is what I did:
Take one, then miss two days, no side effects, did this for about 10 days. Then take one every other day, again for about 10 days. Eventually went onto one every day and have no problems. When I went back for a check up, cholesterol was very low and the consultant was delighted with my actions.
If rosuvastatin is your first statin it may well be worth asking your GP if it can be changed. Alternatively you may well fancy trying my solution which may work with other statins as well.
I would not, for one moment, even suggest trying this approach with any other medications.
I have been taking rovuststatin for years and not had those side effects, may want to get checked out , lots of viruses out there !
I've never experienced any kind of side effects from 5mg Rosuvastatin which I've been on for a number of years. Maybe you've picked up a virus and it's just a coincidence that you've started these at the same time. Give them a chance and if you are still getting symptoms go and see your GP.🤗
Did you have anxiety about taking the medication? Are there other medications you cannot tolerate?
I had a similar issue, I've found that taking 2 paracetamol with it helps. Also take with some food, for me that also helps
I was prescribed 10mg on alternate days and it gave me a headache. With the agreement of the GP practice pharmacist, I split the tablet in half and took it alternate days which helped. Then I upped it to 5mg daily when the headache subsided and after a couple of weeks went onto 10mg on alternate days as originally prescribed. At my request it was increased to daily after I noted my cholesterol had increased slightly in my blood test results. I didn't have any issues with the increased dose, which would suggest the headaches occurred just while my body acclimatised to the medication.
I also suffered with severe headaches with rosuvastatin and also three other statins I tried. I am now successfully taking nusendi which is not a statin but is still keeping my cholesterol down. Might be worth looking into.
