Any info welcomed on the best sort of flu/cold relief meds (over the counter type) to take alongside Bisoprolol 1.25 mg and Atorvastin 80mg plus Aspirin 75mg.
Most of the meds in our store cupboard had different warnings on them ref cardio and heart issues - i.e. Don't take!
I know these meds don't treat a Cold or Flu, but some light relief from the symptoms would be welcomed - providing they don't impact other meds/conditions etc.
Any insight welcomed.
Keep warm!

Ordinarily that's what I'd do - but right now they are swamped and you need to queue forever to speak to a pharmacist - might ask the practice pharmacist at my GP practice for help here.
Which is what I was going to say. I had a very similar conversation with my dispensing pharmacist about ten years ago and in my case he said take half a dose (Day Nurse and Night Nurse in my case) and also Sinex spray relieving blocked nose.
hi, I’m post stemi HA 6 years. I can only take paracetamol, or cocodamol, honey linctus and a few cough sweets ( think lockets are a Nono if I remember correctly). I also use Vicks vapour rub ( best to check this one though 🧐).
There is no cure for flu or a heavy cold, they are viruses. But to help your body fight the infection you should rest as much as you are able and if you go to work don't go, stay at home, and try to minimise contact with others as far as possible to avoid passing it on, And if you feel truly rubbish, go to bed. Otherwise eat as much as you feel you are able, and certainly keep your fluid intake up, but avoid alcohol. If you are s smoker cut down or better don't smoke. Otherwise paracetamol for headaches and any aches and pains. Anything else is probably unnecessary. Finally stay warm.
By coincidence I was also going to post on here a warning about over the counter meds with colds/congested nasal passages. I have just about recovered from a cold which has lasted for 2 weeks and I had a similar conversation with the pharmacist. In my case the prescription meds I have to be watchful of, where they will react to over the counter meds, are Bisoprolol and Tamsulosin (enlarged prostate). A discussion with the pharmacist suggested I take paracetamol, Olbas oil, Beconase or other steroid nasal spray
I recently had a sinus infection and used to take the over the counter meds that open up the airways but like you said they all come with a warning. Asked the pharmacist and he said there is nothing you can safely take with bisoprolol 🙄
I stuck to paracetamol, salt nasal spray and steam to inhale. Hope you feel better soon. 🤞🏻
paracetamol in guided dose only. Simple linctus for a bad cough. Rest and more rest. If on diuretics, watch the fluids by weighing yourself but choose good ones. Unfortunately it’s best to avoid getting the flu in the first place so masks are a good idea atm. And wiping hands again. Hopefully the cold weather will kill some germs as my mum used to swear by. Good luck. And report suspected chest infections, reduced ability to do normal stuff and breathlessness to the gp early. I always get a cold seem to recover then it hits again so invariably need antibs which work so it’s become bacterial. My body works so hard even with heart failure but it needs a cuddle now and then. X
I take any over the counter flu meds, your only taking them for a few days to help you get over the worst of the virus. Also take your flu, covid jabs.
Like you I'm post nstemi and same meds I've discussed various things with my surgery pharmacy and pretty much paracetamol and plenty of fluids is all they recommend only other thing I do is have 2 - 3 large mugs of hot water with slices of lemon and a touch of honey. For sinus, old fashioned method of head over a bowl of hot water with towel over you as I reacted badly to using a nasal spray. Hope you get sorted
Had the same situation over new year with this rotten cold / flu. I rung my GP to discuss what OTC meds I can take, they said to ring NHS111 … which resulted in them wanting to send an ambulance!!! I refused the ambulance and was referred to a clinician via 111. Ultimately my husband ended up going to our local pharmacist armed with details on my ongoing heart issues … bottom line was Vick and paracetamol only!
What I have found helps though is plenty of hot fluids and sitting in the bathroom with the shower running to create a steamy atmosphere … sleeping propped up on pillows helped with the cough too.
Hope you’re feeling better soon, it’s a nasty bug, but hopefully this cold snap will kill these nasty bugs … take care of yourself
Hi I am Post Nstemi 2 years now, 3 stents. I had a hell of a time with Bisoprolol, eventually came off it as it was making me worse. I'm lucky I had a heart MRI and I was deemed safe to stay off all but Aspirin and 1.25 Ramipril. Since then I have been great. I take over the counter flu meds, I prefer the flu capsules, and nasal spray and use a little nasal spray at night. But it's all down to each individual. I had Covid in spite of all of the jabs. Took me 44 days to recover and I use a lot of paracetamol then and used to inhale Vic's over a bowl of hot water.
1.25 Bisoprolol is not a lot but it's a nasty drug, See if it is absolutely the right drug for you.
HiParacetamol for any headache/pain. A spoonful of honey to relieve sore/itchy throat or add it to hot water with some lemon juice for a soothing drink.x
hi, I had NSTEMI and on similar meds. Advised at Cardio Rehab to avoid anything with decongestant type meds (pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine) as was told they can elevate blood pressure … best advice was just stick to taking paracetamol… Hope this helps, and hope you feel better soon!
The best form of defence is to keep your immune system as healthy as possible, eating organic food where possible and establishing a healthy eating regime, along with plenty of exercise and fresh air. However, even the best precautions can sometimes not be enough to stop flu. I have found Ginger tea is a good way to aid recovery - doesn't taste great but easy to make. Grate some raw ginger, put it in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to boil and boil for 20 minutes then strain and drink. It is a go to our home, and also a powerful incentive to keep well, as I don't like the taste 😭😅 but it works!
I take paracetamol and make a honey and lemon drink and I use Vicks vapour rub.I dare not take anything else, as a lot of over the counter stuff for colds and flu, don’t mix with my medication. You can always ask a pharmacist.
Try old fashioned lemon and honey. I am on bisoprolol, rosuvastatin and apixaban, and am allowed paracetamol, maximum 8/day but rarely do I need more than 4.
