Hi Mickey,
I would say welcome but like all of us it's a club none of us wanted to be in.
You've done well I was 54 when I had my heart attack and like you and like others I spoke when it happenes to me, there are folks here who were fit individuals, had good diets, kept healthy but sometimes luck doesn't fall on our side.
The worrying is natural and it's easy for me to say ( a year on) but it will diminish. I will be honest I still do from time to worry about it but what's the point, we've survived a traumatic event, are still alive so let's rebuild step by step.
How are you feeling ?and the rehabilitation is so important both mentally and physically, so stick with it.
Did you get a good echocardiogram result or have you yet to find out?
This forum is brilliant and you'll get lots of support. There is also a BHF Cardio nurse helpline which you can call with any questions you have.
Take it easy for now and I wish you the best.
Hello
It sounds quite a frightening experience which a lot of us have been through and it leaves us with this fear that eventually for most fades as we move on so know it is normal but also it is early days so you need to give yourself time
It is a good job that your wife acted so quickly and with her been a Nurse as well I can imagine if you can talk to her about your fears she can help reassure you
When you get invited along to the Rehab Classes that will help you so much
Remember they have had a good look at your heart , given you the stents needed and will be on all the right medications so you are in such a better place than you were before
Most will relate to how you are feeling and you are not alone and if you need to talk there will be someone to listen to you that understands how you are feeling
Let us know how you get on x
cheers will do I go to my first 1 this Monday and Wednesday I feeling way better now just still have a few flutters but nothing like it was just still shocked it happend to me I have been fit all my life running kids footy teams so big shock we went to New York 4 weeks after my heart attack I have never been so scared of getting on a plane in all my life because what I read on internet I nearly had a panic attack but the flight was great and we walked 45 miles in 5 days and I wasn’t out of breath once so I know the stent is doing its job so I feeling a lot better now
Hello
So many posts on here that members were living a fit healthy lifestyle and then had a heart attack in some cases I think it is just one of those things but because you kept so fit sounds like you are having a good recovery
I can only imagine how you felt getting on the plane but you did and sounds like you had a wonderful time
You are doing really well x
Had my 1st one today rehab class it went well walking / check heart and blood pressure surprised how many people was there in the same posistion as me back Thursday and having a little chat with a therapist about my well being all posistive cheers
glad to hear you’re doing well mate. 👍💪
Cheers m8 hope you are well and everything is great I am doing fine now but to top off a terrible year for me you can not drive for 4 weeks after heart attack the day after I was allowed to drive somebody stole my van ( self employed builder ) with all my tools in off our drive that knocked me about cuz I been struggling to sleep with what has gone on I know my health is more important but it’s something that I could do without but I slowly getting there healthwise I feel nearly brand new cheers
Where do you live and when was this? 2/3 hours for someone having a heart attack seems extreme to me. It was less than 10 minutes when I had my heart attack in Shropshire.
hi mickey
Glad you are on the mend. My husband is also fit and well and had a cardiac arrest nearly 3 years ago now. I also took him to a & e as the ambulance would have been a while. We live in Surrey ! He walked into A&E and arrested almost straight away. Mind you we were told it was lucky he was there as they may not have saved him at home even if the ambulance got here on time !
The anxiety does get better. Well done for flying so soon after. We went to Greece about months after and my husband did struggle a bit on the flight home.
Keep going with the rehab. Lots of good information and a controlled environment to see what you should or should not be doing.
Good luck with the recovery.
Hi Micky,Very like yourself I was fit and healthy before my widow maker heart attack. My cardiologist told me that my lifestyle had saved me (I did not crash and the NHS were brilliant with the ambulance service, paramedics and the RVI doing a great job!)
My Dad died at the same age as my heart attack from the same issue but he was a smoker. The cardiologist said" genetics is first and lifestyle second" in terms of my risk so a positive is your fit and active lifestyle probably saved you.Its also very common to have PTSD after an "incident" and moods go up and down but I tell myself what have I learned and what can I tell others? That's why I have typed this! Take care and look at simple things that you can do to help your mind, such as.
* mindfulness
*saying no thank you to requests you do not want to do.
*exercise
* self help groups
Cheers !
Good to hear your recovering well I had mine at 56 been fit active came as a shock but that's 15 years ago I'm 70 now just retired from being a tree surgeon so your goona be fine ,I've had no issues since with my ticker except after a covud shot but that's a different story
I'd have been scared too if the ambulance couldn't get to me. Your wife must have been even more scared. I was lucky when I had a heart attack the ambulance only took 10 minutes at most . It took 5 hours in A&E before I was checked b ut then I was admitted immediately ( Lucky there was a bed), monitored and left until next morning before stents were fitted. I'd had a few twinges of sharp pain late at night for a few weeks but thought it was muscular. I went through everything you're feeling until I realised what a great chance I'd been given and how lucky I was . My mum didn't get any warning or treatment. My only complaints are the lack of explanation by the cardiologist and that I was refused rehab because I use a wheelchair.
I had those sharp pains every now and again aswell but thought it was aches strains from work glad you’re on the mend now m8
And you. Glad you got a second chance. Sounds as if you're making the most of it. I lost 2 stone simply by looking at what I ate and cutting out cakes, biscuits and crisps. I didn't even notice until my GP commented on how thin I looked. He actually got quite worried that I'd lost so much so quickly and did blood tests for cancer. It wasn't of course.
No explanation is, it seems completely normal. We fixed your plumbing now go away! Luckily I had a fantastic GP who explained everything to me in detail. My discharge letter needed a medical degree to understand it. It may as well have been written in Latin. I didn't even get the cardiologists name but I did get a huge apology from the head of rehab a couple of years later.
Had a similar but not quite as dramatic experience in the gym age 49.The thing I found was the process flattened my previous high fitness level so bit of a battle to get back but..it is doable.
Still going 15 years on and off skiing next month!!
Good luck with your recovery.
I waited 2 hours for an ambulance when I had my heart attack and was on my own at home, they said they would call me back and triage me that took an hour!
