Hello. Had ICD fitted last Sept and with all those travel adverts on after Christmas wondered if safe to fly with one? I know travel insurance will increase but not clear on what ICD means when planning to go abroad.

Flying ?
Hi, my son had one fitted almost 3 weeks ago. We have a holiday abroad in April so this was one of my questions.Aside from not going through the security scanner at airport security, they said there are no issues for the ICD while flying. I hope this helps.
I had a holiday booked 6 months after my ICD implantation and asked my consultant at the time if was OK and he confirmed it was totally fine as long as I felt well in myself. I was a little nervous at the time, but soon relaxed and it was totally fine. As someone else mentioned, advise them at security that you have the device and they will ask to see your ICD certificate and passport, so don't put these in the tray. Also going into the pool, enter it gradually to climatise your body rather than jumping straight in...I'm always careful to do this to ensure I don't shock my body. Other than that, just enjoy your holiday. I've flown several times since and have even gone on fairground rides 🤗
My husband has one and yes you can fly providing your medical team says you are fit to travel.
You should have been given a laminated ICD card which is internationally recognised at airports
You show this before going through security- they will turn off the magnetic security screening- you will then walk through and they will use a handheld scanner to check you over - they will keep it a set distance from your ICD
You need to declare your ICD to travel insurance and declare why it was gutter - precaution or because you had a cardiac arrest
It’s also best to have travel insurance before you book any flights or holiday - if you don’t and you pay out for your holiday ,then your ICD triggers and you become unfit to travel you lose financially
If you are on any heart meds , take all of these in their original prescription boxes in your hand luggage
Good luck
Hi I've had an ICD for 4 years now and have flown all over the world with no issues. As others have mentioned, tell them at security and they'll search you the old fashioned way. However some airports now have modern scanners that are safe for ICDs. You will have to avoid travelleters as they have strong electromagnets.
Hi when I had my ICD I went on holiday to Europe a lot and the only thing I had to bother about was some of the airport scanner's if you just show them the proof that you have an icd they will just do a pat down, they are really used to it at airports. Have a lovely holiday char
No problem. My husband had one, could not go through the scanner, and was always disappointed when the hand search was done by a male and not female 😂.
