I’ve been prescribed verapamil and wondered if anyone had experience with it? The pharmacist said it could cause low blood pressure and dizziness, which I’m a bit worried about since I have been moved to this from Ivabradine as I was getting dizziness from that.
I have a persistently fast heart rate and yet to find something to slow it down!

Hi, I’m on 120mg verapamil once a day. For 10 years I took 240mg a day. No issues/side effects….wouldn’t know I was taking it. Earlier this year cardiologist recommended switching to Bisoprolol….:absolutely awful! Upset stomach, bpm 31, non stop ectopics, more AF, breathless , 1 stone weight gain (over 6 months). So back to verapamil and all is good again! Bpm average 50. I’ve really had no problems with it which is great as I do get side effects from many medications. Good luck…
I have been on verapamil for around 6-8 weeks.. 1x3 daily. I was on Bisoprolol previously for around 4yrs.
While on Bisoprolol my main issue was dizzy spells, and lower BP 92/70 and heart rate around 55-65.
Since on verapamil I have very limited dizziness now, also feel my HR has increased a little around 60-75 and BP around 98/75. Think other side affect that I have had has been constipation, although I had been taking Chia seeds daily which helps with going to toilet.
Everyone reacts different to meds, but mine has been a positive one, however I Did have an AF episode on 30/11 and had a Cardioversion, previous one was Nov 2023...but maybe just a coincidence.
I couldn't take betablockers due to my Raynauds so have been on Verapimil for the past three years. I'm on 240mg which works well. I naturally have a low blood pressure (100/60) and the Verapimil doesn't seem to affect it. However, because my Afib tachycardia is getting worse I was tried on 360mg. It allowed me to exercise more which was great, but then my ECG started showing I was having long pauses (long R-R intervals) so now I'm back to 240 and take an additional 120 as a pill in the pocket for when the Afib gets bad and that seems too work.
I just wanted to put an update for anyone in future who may be worried about starting verapamil. I’ve been taking it for just under 2 weeks now and have felt fine so far. A little dizziness now and again when I’m walking but it’s manageable. Gradually my daily average heart rate is coming down too which is good. I even had a heart rate of 65bpm which is unheard of for me! Still jumps around up to 150-160bpm if I don’t sit down quick enough when it starts racing but overall it’s going in the right direction. Long may it continue!
I was so worried about starting it after not having the best time with Ivabradine so everyone’s input was so helpful! Thank you all again!
Thanks for giving the update. I m now in your shoes having ended up at hospital with the effects of bisoprolol. It even gave me painful joints mimicking my rheumatoid arthritis.
Good luck! I took propranolol for a year prior to this but it made me get much worse numb fingers from Raynauds and I was easily tired when trying to exercise. I don’t think I’ve noticed any side effects from the verapamil.. only thing was that I missed one dose early on and I woke up with a pounding heart rate and very sweaty! Haven’t had that since and haven’t missed any more tablets!
