Alcohol

I don't drink a lot. In fact haven't had a pint since April. Going out for dinner over weekend and would love just one pint of beer.I'm on apixaban, furosemide, rampril, betablocker, simvestatin daily.

Hope it will be OK. Not driving either.

Had coronary angiogram last Wednesday.

Meant to ask cardiologist then but forgot.

I don't intend to make it a habit but would just love a treat!

Thoughts?

Look at the patient information sheets that come with your meds. If they advise not to consume alcohol with any of the meds you take, then don't. If it says nothing to that effect you are free to enjoy a beer. But if you still want complete re-assurance talk to a pharmacist. That's the pharmacology view. The other view is entirely down to how you view drinking alcohol given the medical advice surrounding it. My view is if you haven't had a pint since April you certainly deserve one , perhaps two, assuming you are free to do so given the meds you take. Just because we are heart patients doesn't mean we always have to go without the things we enjoy on every single occasion, when the actual risk is probably very low.

Have a look here if you don't have the inserts with the pills: bnf.nice.org.uk/

I'm on some of the types of meds you're taking but not anticoagulant. I have one drink periodically for years with no ill effects. Most of the people I know on anticoagulants also enjoy a drink on certain occasions without incident. Notice that it's only one drink!

I’m on candesartan (switched from ramipril), carvedilol (beta blocker), and apixaban (anti coag) and I enjoy a few glasses of wine a couple of times a week. No alcohol will always be better but my cardiologist is ok with me drinking lightly.

I'm on quite a few meds still have a drink with a meal but don't go mad Gp said its ok

you are allowed 14 units per week, dont bindge drin. A beer or a wine at an out are fine, but don’t overdo it. Lets say a couple of pints, just don't get plastered.

Life is too short to deprive yourself the odd pleasure. Have a beer, savour it and have a good time with friends or family.

Hello on similar to you, and whilst I don't drink and haven't done for about 4 years now (stopped before I fell ill), I understand I could have had a drink as long as I stayed within the prescribed limits, but do check first.

That being said I do have the odd non-alcoholic beer about once a month. I would say give them a go, their are some really good non-alcoholic beers now , I have also tried the zero Guinness and was very pleasantly surprised with it.

Whatever you do have a good evening.

I actually lost my taste for alcohol once I started on the standard cocktail, as it were, on post HA meds. I'll have a small glass of wine with dinner to be sociable but it takes a long time to drink it. I do miss a good pint or three but beer just doesn't taste good anymore.

I asked that question to my surgeon. He said a couple of pints won’t hurt you as long as you stay sensible. Obviously not every day and not to excess and you’ll be fine.

I was told that alcohol limits were strict for me, 14 units a week and a maximum of 4 units in any one session, that’s a pint of strong cider or just under two pints of beer.

I’m on a beta blocker, statin, blood pressure tablet and calcium channel blocker. When the advice was given I was on an anti-coagulant (Ticagrelor) as well.

JennyRx profile image
JennyRx in reply toSurvivor1952

That’s the same advice for everyone. 14 units a week and 4 units per session (otherwise it’s classed as binge drinking)

Alicant profile image
Alicant in reply toJennyRx

That’s in UK…different countries have different units….in Spain for men it can be up to 35 units a week😉😉🤔 ..Just been on holiday to Spain…”When in Rome …”😂😂😂

JennyRx profile image
JennyRx in reply toAlicant

Gosh 35 units is really quite a lot. I’m not too bothered about alcohol tbf. But I really think there should not be a limit for driving. Just no alcohol if you’re driving as everyone convinces themselves that they haven’t drunk too much.

Here in France I said I told the cardiologist I drank two glasses of red wine a week. He said " You mean per day, surely?"

Usually it says on medication if not allowed to drink and I think if you fancy a pint then have one- life needs to be lived even if we have long term conditions x

I'm on bisoprolol 5mg and warfarin with INR target of 3. I drink regularly, but in small quantities, and have a couple of alcohol free days a week. I would say I drink 7 to occssional max 12 units a week. I have to be consistent with warfarin, so abstaining or having too much is likely to knock me off INR level.I love drinking brown beer. Often have a 500ml bottle, drink half, and put a wine stopper on and put back into the fridge. Enjoy the rest the next day, but wait no longer than a day once opened. You can get wine in187ml bottles.

Of all the medication I checked it appears bisoprolol(2.5mg for me) indicates about alcohol on the info sheet. For me it would be just a very occasional pint of beer. I do miss having a pint occasionally with having dinner out.

Yes, I could do without it but I feel sometimes I deserve a treat!

If you have been on bisoprolol for some time it should be OK.

Honestly, if there are no contradictions I would have a beer. Its about lifestyle and eating or drinking anything that gives us enjoyment. A little can be better than none. But its your life. I had major heart issues 24 yrs ago and cut out most alchohol. The occasional red wine or beer I still enjoy. Just check with the pharmacy there are no contradictions. Take care, all the best. 🙂

I still have a few pints , I'm in menorca now and have enjoyed a few . My advice as I consider myself a beer connoisseur 😂is dont drink anything brewed in the uk as some breweries needlessly throw in glucose syrup . German beer you cant go wrong, they have purity laws . Enjoy

Gooner1947 profile image
Gooner1947 in reply toBluelobby

Never knew that about beer!

Bluelobby profile image
Bluelobby in reply toGooner1947

Very easy to see pal , cruzcampo is from Seville for instance , the ones on sale here are brewed here and not imported. When buying just check the ingredients and country of origin . Clean beers include anything German, peroni(Italy) , estrella damm, estrella galicia (spain) Heineken silver , grolsch (holland) any other Heineken is Edinburgh or manchester , most Belgian. As I say in Germany they are allowed 4 ingredients otherwise they arnt allowed to call it beer . Throw syanide in it in the uk and no one would bat an eyelid 😂

Ingredients, country

Wow! You know your beer!I was stationed in Germany back in 60's!

My favourite beer was Dortmunder Union. I was stationed in Dortmund.

The days when I did not drink in moderation!

We normally spend the winter months out in India and Philippines. Unfortunately can't make it coming winter.

I'm more or less between procedures.

I did speak to cardiologist, who did my coronary angiogram last Wednesday, and I got the impression he thinks I should wait till having the TAVI and then discuss it all.

As a fellow Gooner,I know how you feel ,have not a pint ,for 15 years due to gout problems,

nervous about indulging in ,a light and bitter, those were the days, standing in the north end.

Have you tried low or non-alcoholic beers? They’ve moved on a long way since they first appeared. As a an occasional beer drinker myself I also like Moretti zero and Lucky Saint low alcohol. The latter can be found on draught in some places. I’m not a Guinness drinker but I’m told their 0.0 is very good. Low alcohol can be a good alternative on a night out I find.

Good luck on your quest.

I think one with a meal would be OK. Perhaps split it into two halves to see how you feel after the first one. Apixaban is the one to watch, and the NHS website says alcohol is OK, but, as always, no more than 14 units/week. A pint of beer is not going to reach that level. Enjoy.

Im on Biosopril, lasasprozal, asprin, empagliflozan, entresto and ezetimbe, I don't drink very often but if I feel like a glass of wine I damn well have it. I was told I could but I just seem to have lost the taste and I rarely drank before HA last year. If its ok with your meds, just go for it...As they say..we are a long time dead and its a short life so.....

I have not have any alcohol since I was diagnosed with AF about a year ago as nearly all of the research and my doctors advice were not drinking give you a better chance to heal. I miss my wine but my heart is improving and I feel more energized. Perhaps alcohol consumption have anything to do with this , as I am also increasing my steps and on food following the Mediterranean lifestyle eating as much as possible. I am no expert but exercise , the right food and drink , sleeping well and a supportive family - I think could help all of us with heart issues.

There are some great non-alcoholic beers currently being produced. Athletic "Run Wild" is my favorite - it's a IPA.

I was on all of those apart from furosemide. They said the blood thinner was fine as long you didn’t binge drink (I sometimes did which I sure is not good at all). One beer should be fine but I’m not a doctor and don’t know your medical history
