Hello, would appreciate some advice please. I had Defib fitted Sept 12th and now at home recovering and coming to terms with the life-changing implications. A lifestyle question please - is it safe to drink alcohol when on low dosage of Bisoprol Fumurate?

Possible side-effects of alcohol if taking Bisoprol Fumarate?
Hi Jack
Like everything, in moderation I suspect you would be fine. I have an ICD fitted and was on bisoprol, I only drink rarely at social occasions and didn't have any negative side effects, however, I'm no medical expert and everyone handles alcohol differently. My own experience was fine but as I say I only really drink now and then on special occasions
Bisoprol caused me issues when the doses were increased (bad stomach) and eventually I was swapped to a different beta blocker that I was able to tolerate
Hope this helps
Thank you, much appreciated. Still very nervous with ICD but advice from others such as yourself great start to process of acceptance.
The ICD takes time to get used to but in time it just becomes normal, you won't really notice it or worry about it. It's there to do a job, in my case it recently triggered when I passed out, I didn't have a clue anything had happened, just woke after a few mins on the floor.. trust that it's there to help you
I don't even really notice it anymore it's just become a part of me and very clever in that it's constantly monitoring my heart
Drinking alcohol can increase the blood pressure lowering effect of bisoprolol. If this happens you might feel dizzy or lightheaded. You should be aware of this if you’re just starting on bisoprolol or have had the dose increased.
I take bisoprolol and also drink alcohol within the recommended guidelines and have not noticed any ill effects.
I have a large glass of red wine mon-thurs and go out socialising for two hours every Friday and having 3-4 pints of ale.i take 1.25 bisoprolol every day with nil after effects!
I've got an ICD and on various meds but it's the Afib that stopped me drinking It's a small change to keep you alive and healthy
I was told no more than 4 units in any one session and 14 units a week as a strict limit. I was on 1.25mg Bisoprolol but changed due to an unrelated side effect (dry eye).
it depends why you are taking bisoprolol. Alcohol can set off arrhythmias. Very common causation of Atrial fibrillation. I was told not to consume caffeine or alcohol to prevent bigeminy.
Hope this helps
*one or two!
I have an ICD and used to be on Bisoprolol with no adverse effects relating to alcohol - had to switch though because it made me so fatigued
Jack I have been on varying dose of bisoprol for several years and have always drank small amounts of alcohol averaging a couple of drinks 5 out of the week and never noticed any symptoms other than pleasant slight intoxication. Why do you ask?
My defib was in 2011: I was 61, and 13 years later I stopped alcohol when it induced vf`s. Everybody is different and my son and daughter (doctors) tell me I CAN drink alcohol. However.....I do feel better without it, so no loss of enjoyment there.
Ta-ra and welcome to the club.
