I was previously on 2.5 of bisoprolol then I had an episode of an HR of 160 so took a visit to AE and the doctor upped my meds to 10mg. Since these last 7 days or so I have felt dizzy , nausea and being sick and headaches , has anyone else experienced this were they have had there meds upped up to such a large amount ? The dr had said it will take 2/6 weeks to kick in even though I’ve been on 2.5 for nearly 2 years 😊

Has your heart rate gone down now? I take 2.5mg twice daily and guess you are taking 10mg once a day?

My heart rate has gone to 65 now , maybe I should ask my doctor to take it like you do your , I think 10mg is way to strong specially going up from 2.5mg

Hi BabsssugarI'm on 7.5mgs Bisoporil, taken at night, amongst a cocktail of other drug delights. Don't have any issues with it.
I started on a very low dose 3 years ago but needed 7.5mgs to keep me steady for the past 2 years. 🙏

I have been on 10 mg for about 3 years, stepped up from 2.5, and have not had any of these effects. But we are all different in our responses. I have had many less migraines, and not so severe, but that is not a side-effect to complain about!
I started on 2.5mg, then 7.5mg...I had the dizziness and bad dreams, which settled after a while as your body needs a bit of time to get used to it. It took my body about 6 weeks. I'm now on 10mg, but this is taken as 5mg am and 5mg pm. 10mg in one go I think is way too harsh.
Hi Babs - I was started on 1.25mg daily after a HA & triple bypass in February last year, the dosage was upped to 2.5mg daily in June as my GP felt my heart rate was still a little high (almost 100bpm on occasion). I had episode of Afib in October/November and the dosage was upped again at the end of December to 5mgs daily. My HR's been fine ever since (thankfully!) and usually around 65-75bpm these days. It did take a good few weeks (until February) to fully settle down though. My only side effect seems to be over-tiredness, but I can cope with that. My GP told me that they like to start everyone off on 1.25mg after a HA but usually find a few dosage tweaks are needed afterwards. Carol
After my HA I was started on 3.75mg, but experienced feelings of impending doom - a truly horrible experience. My GP said he normally tried to increase the dose, not lower it. I do find that approach bizarre as we are all different. We almost had an argument about it when I told him I would cut the pill in half. Thankfully the pharmacist at my GP practice took a more pragmatic approach and I am now on 1.25mg and have a resting heart rate of around 55. I dread to think what 10mg would do to me.

Interesting that your GP wasn't keen on lowering your dose of Bisoprolol, mine seems to be adopting a similar approach. I was put on 2.5mg when I was diagnosed with AF. I have been on it since the end of February, but am not dealing with it too well. I have lots of episodes of being breathless and also struggle with feeling faint. I feel even 2.5mg is too much for me at the moment. My resting heart rate has been greatly reduced and now, some 58% of all my readings are between 40-50 bpm. My BP is averaging 116/68, so that seems pretty good. I wonder if 20mg of blood thinners (Rivaroxaban) is not helping either. Maybe, I need to do what you did and talk to the Pharmasist. Trouble is, the last time we spoke, she wanted to put me on statins because an algorhythm predicted I stood a 35% chance of having a heart attack or a stroke in the next 10 years.
My brother suffers from AF and he was prescribed Bisoprolol, initially 2.5mg when he was on holiday in Portugal. He still didn't feel, so he went back to the hospital and they upped the dose to 5mg which made the situation worse. He had to stop taking it. Thankfully when he got back home his GP prescribed Apixaban instead and he is now relatively okay. He does get breathless at times, but he is in his 80s.
Although I'm only on 1.25mg Bisoprolol, I do feel that it limits my exercise on account of my low pulse rate which is rarely over 100. Thankfully I'm not a runner and never have been and only have to cope with steep inclines on the hills and mountains. Of course I can take the ascents at my own pace and, if necessary, stop to take a few photos now and then. Bisoprolol has had minimal effect on my blood pressure.
As regards statins, well I tried 4 before I settled on a low dose of Rosuvastatin. It has lowered my cholesterol a little and though probably not as much as I would like, it's a question of balance.
Hi, I my bisoprolol dose was changed from 5mg to 10mg and had the same effects as you. The cardiac nurse told me it was to big an increase in one go and prescribed 6.25 for now. The tablet can be broken in half.
My bisoprolol was raised straight up from low to 10 mg quickly. Luckily I didn't have any side effects, although with my other meds I was dizzy and exhausted at first.
Hiya I felt really dizzy and a couple of times I fainted I still feel a bit dizzy now and again after a couple of months but no way near as bad 💚
Whilst i'm no medical professional and am grateful for those that operated on me & my heart I can't say i'm surprised to hear of your reaction given the jump from 2.5mg to 10mg.
Personally I'm on 2.5mg of bisoprolol and have been since getting my quad bypass over 3 yrs ago. Only change was when the HF (heart failure) dept tried putting me up to 5mg (even though all my readings were fine and well within levels) and I had similar to yourself the dizziness lack of balance etc. I contacted my GP who recommended that i return to the 2.5mg but to contact HF dept @ the hospital for advice. Their response was well our guidance says that you should be on the 5mg level so that's why they increased. My response back was I'm an individual case and would like to be treated as one and therefore I must fall outside of your guidelines. They signed me off onto my GP with immediate effect? (never heard anything more from them since - almost 3 yrs ago).
Unfortunately sometimes it's almost like a checklist/tick box exercise that they can seem to go through so if it says it on the checklist then you must adhere and forgetting about each of us as individuals and how each different body can react. I've changed statins 3 times to get to the right one for me.

I am on 7.5mg just recently been increased prescribes. Have no side effects so far. This was done because my blood projection as they described it I think as dropped from 34% to 25% in just under a year. Is this bad.
You are so right I also had to change stains to find a reasonable one. There are planning to do another MRI again. Had a defibrillator implant last June. If my blood projection is at 25% is that bad. Can't get a straight answer from the doctors or nurses.

Could I please ask about how long the episode of 160 bpm lasted? For example, did it last only a minute or less, or did it last for a longer period of time? If it lasted for a longer period of time, did your GP order blood tests?
One of the symptoms that I had with my HA was a very high heart rate for an extended period of time. Blood tests showed increased troponin levels.
I know that it is very scary dealing with high heart levels. It took months after my HA and an increase in beta blockers and statins to get my heart rate to a more ‘normal level when just walking a short distance from my bedroom to the bathroom. Yesterday, I had 21 exercise minutes for indoor walking and my bpm only got to 126. It is a small victory to many on here, but it is a victory for me. 😆
But 2-3 months ago, I was indoor walking and my heart beat went above 164. It was a spike, and it didn’t last long, but it scared me to death. I actually stopped walking for a couple of days. Thank goodness that BeKind gave me some kind and encouraging words. She helped me to get back to walking again despite my fears.
I don’t know all of your medical details, but is bisoprolol a beta blocker? My cardiologist made an adjustment in mine last June. I take metropolol—one pill was 50 mg—she increased my dosage to 75mg. This means that I have to cut pills in half and take 1 1/2 pills per day, but it does seem to work. Perhaps you could discuss this idea with your doctor. It might be that 5 mg of your drug might work better for you than 2.5 mg
The first step should really be to discuss all of this with your doctor. I wish you well in sorting this out.
