Hi I went into afib on about day 5 in the middle of the night while still in hospital. I'd never had it before and it freaked me out and I thought I was dying as it felt like it was shaking my whole body . They told me it was one of the more common risks after bypass. They put me on amiodarone to help regulate the heart beat and blood thinners . I only seemed to get mine during the night but nearly every night while in hospital. Since then I had it the 2 nights after I was released and again a couple of days later which was confirmed by my fitbit but then the tablets seemed to have done their job for me and have been off the amiodarone for about 10 days now. Am now 8 weeks after bypass and was told I would see consultant at 6 weeks but phoned last week and told it will be another 6 weeks . I would like to have my mind put at rest as it does make you very anxious every time I can feel my heart beating lying in bed just want to know it's normal . Sorry if that's not reassuring but the answer is yes I got afib aswell hopefully medication will settle it for you x

Thanks for your reply I hope you get sorted soon I don’t know about you but I felt I was discharged without info regards what to expect so every time I get a pain or feel unwell I just don’t know if it’s part of recovery or something is wrong …anyway good luck going forward

The symptoms of AF is normal after heart bypass surgery as your heart becomes very sensitive when it has been handled this occurred to me after the operation whereby you start to feel queezy light headed and feeling a bit shaky week legs you just have to lay or sit quietly to let your heart catch-up as it slows down slightly I was ok after that but do get occasional events of that nature as hypoglycemic symptoms if that happens take something sugary like a sweet tea, biscuit or glucose tablets you should carry with you as you may need as many as 6 tablets with tea or water sit down and learn to moderate your breathing and allow your heart to catch-up failing that talk to your GP you may need to change your medication.

Best regards

Big Al

it’s very common, the heart doesn’t like being handled and this is the result.

I had two bouts within 24 hours of my AVR and CABG. It settled with medication whilst in hospital but I was put on Amiodarone for a period after discharge. Not on it any more thankfully, it’s nasty stuff for side effects for me.

I’m 13 months on now and living a completely normal life again.

I’ve had it for the best part of 6 days now it’s seems to be more prominent in the afternoon and evening and evertime I go to bed my pulse is so slow when it happens hopefully they can get it sorted thanks for your reply
