Heart meds problem airport security

I have just read an alarming report of a woman being stopped and questioned by airport security because apparently her heart meds contain traces of an ingredient which is also used in making explosives- nitroglycerin. Anyone else in this position should be aware in case they encounter the same situation.

I've carried the spray for just over 10 years, in that time I've probably been on about 40 flights, I always take the one out of my pocket and my spare out of my hand luggage and pop them into a plastic bag and put them in the tray for scanning.

Zero issues.

I travel regularly for leisure and work and I always take 3 weeks worth of my meds in case of any travel issues. I always keep in my hand luggage clearly visible I always keep them in the original packaging and I have my prescriptions to view on my phone From my online chemist. I have never had a one issue or even been questioned.

Somebody has been feeding you duff information. I can assure you there are no restrictions with airport security with any heart medications. Just keep them with the original packets. Some people just want to cause dramas for no reason.

This was the article I read.

I also carry a GTN spray and I have never had any problems. Wonder if it’s just this airport?

Article was in Newsweek

probably caused by an ill informed security staff member and a slow news week - this sort of story gets passed on through social media and becomes a scare story, causing untold anxiety and inconvenience or worse

This is not all “rubbish”. GTN spray is a common medication, is allowed on planes and you will have no trouble carrying it through security. However, if it has been used and you have any residue of it on anything that is “swabbed” it will set off the machine that detects explosives. This is because GTN and Nitroglycerin are the same thing. It is an explosive. You won’t have any problem explaining it though, they will see it all the time.

Interesting. I flew back from Cyprus (Paphos airport) and set off the alarms. I was then tested for potential explosives which was a shock and had to have my hands and waist area wiped. Maybe this was the cause............🤔🤔

When Opt for the pacemaker friendly scanner / body search it seems routine to swab hands etc and sometimes check shoes. Have always assumed it is easy for them to reach quotas for these tests as I am already out of line. Nothing sinister and invariably most helpful and courteous ! PLH

Hi I couldn't get the link to open so I am not sure what heart meds are mentioned. I have travelled for years through airport's in a few different countries with various heart meds and I haven't been stopped once. I take my prescription with me just in case but so far no one has asked for it. I know codeine is banned in a few countries including Greece and the UAE. Char

It’s GTN spray

My GTN spray was looked at in detail also. I now understand why, so better to have it ready for inspection/examination anyways.
