Short update today

Ralph good today. Walked the length of the ward, round the pillar holding roof up, back to his bed. Sat for 30 seconds, pointed down the ward and did it again... amazing.Still deciding what to do regarding tests and treatment at chesterfield, few consultants in theatre today so seeing him tomorrow. Everyone trying hard to find a solution. xx

A few rounds of tap dancing and hip-hop then!! Well done Ralph. Just wished you could get some peace of mind about future treatments so he'll be singing as well. Make sure you take care of yourself Sue.

Lots of love and hugs. Jan xxxx

They must find a solution. They WILL. Where there's a will there's a way. Xx

That's brilliant news, you must be so proud of him making such an effort to keep mobile. I really hope they can find a solution that can work for you all, take care char x

Thank Castleview, more positive news. I hope he stays where he is for a while at least. But if the treatment demands it, I suppose it is for the best 😊 x

in reply toWooodsie

Trouble is, he can have all the treatment in Chesterfield, but there is no cover to deal with his tracheotomy on weekends on a normal ward.

So they do have someone on HDU at weekends? Can't they pop down?

in reply toWooodsie

Yes HDU have staff, but it's one to one nursing, plus it's only the suctioning he requires when he coughs too much and they basically hoover it up through the tube. Only happens a couple of times a day, and never happened at night in the 3 months he's had it

Talk to PALS, S, your needs should be taken into account too. Plus moving Ralph twice every weekend is traumatic for him too.

in reply toWooodsie

They haven't decided yet, they're talking of fitting a PEG which will give him another week then they could do the shock thing which would be another week, so waiting to see atm x

Sorry, but it could be best to talk to PALS before they make a decision. Undoing a decision is much harder than influencing one. Please feel free to tell me off for being bossy 🤣🤣 (I am a chef you know 🫢😉) x

Down the ward twice?!!! Fantastic....sounds like a very determined man and it can all only bode well in his recovery. Is he aiming for a park run? 😀👍...Well done Ralph. I really hope they get the problem sorted out with regard to him being taken elsewhere so that neither of you have that as an added worry xx

Does he know about the list of chores you have for him back home? How does he feel about diggng over the vegetable garden and painting the window frames?

well done Ralph and you too Sue.

The advice to speak to PALS is spot on. They know how everything works and can help you (I also used them as an outlet to cry on, which they are well used to). And we’re all here cheering you on.

Sending hugs to you both x

The walking will be so good for his muscle strength and circulation. The other problem sounds a long process, but good that they are not rushing and thinking what is best. I hope they will sort something out for you at weekends. Good news that Ralph has come such a long way and the end is in sight.
