I know this has been asked many times but I'm looking for Insurance for a Spain visit. £1054 quoted. Can anybody tell me who they used. I answered all questions honestly for obvious reasons. Diana

Hi yes you’re right it is asked a lot. And I always recommend Avanti, they covered me when a lot wouldn’t or were ridiculously expensive.

That is an awful lot, my mum when she was in her 80's used Saga insurance although they weren't particularly cheap it might be worth getting a quote, char

Hi, you could try Avanti travel insurance , they charged me £490 for 4 weeks in Australia.

All Clear. I booked it last week to cover cruise to Spain and Portugal. I'm 70 and have unstable angina, underactive thyroid and arthritis. Also meds for BP and statins. Total 10 tablets a day! Not currently under investigation for any of them. The cruise company preferred insurer quoted £978!!!! All Clear cost £220 for 2 weeks for their platinum policy which has zero excess. They had a 20% discount offer which I believe finishes this week.

there is no one particular company that is going to be the cheapest for everyone. A lot has to do with medical conditions and if you are receiving ongoing hospital treatment, for me even a yearly echocardiogram counts against you. Also if you have had to attend AE due to your conditions. The best I could get last year was all clear £740 for a yearly policy but restricted destinations and doesn’t include cancellation cover due to being on the waiting list for an op.

I've gone with Hastings before...I'm going to investigate my Nationwide Flex account cover this time and see what they can do .

Just to remind you that Nationwide are changing their travel insurance provider from 1 May 2024 so it may be advisable to double check what travel cover will be available to you.

Hi Diana, that really is a lot. Have you got a GHIC (follow the link), this provides you with all the health cover you need for free. What it doesn't cover is repatriation expenses if you need them (dead or alive) or accomodation if you can't travel back. Personally, I wouldn't bother with health insurance, but it is up to you. You could try to get repatriation cover as a stand alone, you would need a broker to speak directly with an insurance company.

Hi. I recently had to claim travel insurance which was provided by AXA. When I purchased my husband had no pre- existing conditions. As he suffered a HA and OHCA clearly he was not fit to fly. It took me more than 3 months and far too many emails and telephone calls to mention. I was repeatedly asked for his medical history covering the last 2 years. Which had already been supplied. I only got a response after I posted publicly on Twitter.

Therefore , in my opinion, I would not recommend AXA.

If you have anyone in the family who was or is in the military (say a parent during WWII is acceptable) and if you are under the age of 72 then check "Forces Pension Society". Annual cover is valid Worldwide for a fixed premium starting from 1st November. There are only a few specific health questions that are asked but you must be sure that you have Doctors permission to travel. If you join the society there is a flat rate fee (cover 1 or 2 people) and if you join before the 1st November you have to pay the full annual premium from then but you won't get a year's cover until you renew in November. Check the figures and you can see if it works for you. They are happy to explain everything on the phone so you can make an informed decision.

We used All Clear for our trip to Egypt in November after a bad experience trying to renew with Staysure. This is based on my phone experiences with both of them; with All Clear one person dealt with me from beginning to end and made sure I understood what I was being asked. After being put on hold three times with Staysure for the salesperson to check my answers with her supervisor and refusing my request to speak to the supervisor directly I was too stressed to continue with the call. I called back the next day and cancelled my renewal.

This is based on my personal experience, I have heard and read differing opinions of Staysure’s service from others but most of them have been negative.

I've got it down to just over £800. Still a lot but a bit better. That's with Avanti. Thanks for all replies. Di

My husband and I are going to Jamaica soon and he has a travel insurance with his Barclays bank account. One of those that you pay a small amount a month for travel/motor rescue etc. He has High BP and Raised Cholesterol and I have a Left Branch Bundle Block. We called the provider (AXA) and found we were both covered without any extra needed. Granted my heart condition has no other underlying issues and I am not on any medication and his issues are controlled by meds. However it might be worth checking if you do have one of those bank accounts.

Bikafella profile image

I'm sure you've had a positive experience with insurance/ breakdown/travel through your bank but you have to be sure of what cover you are actually getting. From my experience of this, you just get very basic non-specific cover and it really may not suit your own health situation. The devil is in the detail so do read the small print as ANY insurance company will do their best to invalidate a claim. Their main job is to get in premiums and and try and avoid paying anything out - their duty is to their shareholders not the customers.

Wow, that's more expensive than over here in Aus. We paid $1200 for a week's cruise. Age and pre-existing health issues make it very difficult since the time we cannot mention.

You could try Total Travel Protection totaltravelprotection.com/ I'm using them, they have a very realistic approach to existing conditions, and age. Really price competitive also.

I have travel insurance with my bank account and used their medical screening. It only cost me £54.00 extra. Past NSTEMI, 4 stents last August and lots of medication.
