Hi all and am going to Portugal at the weekend I am starting to feel a bit of anxiety I’m 18 months down the line, the consultant has cleared me,and handed me back to my doctor, my question is will I be ok to swim in the pool and the sea? I have only just thought about this and now I am fretting !

I believe the NHS says that after 3 months of having a bypass (which I think is what you’re referring to) it is safe to swim.

However, it is probably wise to double check with you cardiologist once more before you fly.

All the best.

Hi thanks for your reply they have cleared me to fly, and my insurance is all ok, i was told at the beginning no swimming to begin with, but it has been 18 months now, it only came to me tonight and now I’m worrying about it, I will give my doctor’s surgery a call in the morning failing that I will phone and ask at the hospital

Thanks again 🙂

I flew out to where we usually go in Kefalonia 15 months after my bypass op. Enjoyed the pool and the sea as usual. No problems whatsoever. At least the Med is warm enough to swim in... much nicer than the sea off Bournemouth last year! The fact that you are asking about this issue shows that you are on the ball. Enjoy your holiday. 😀

I wouldn't sea swim yet. Very different to pool swimming, currents and waves more strenous.

Hi I sea swam in Majorca 14 months after my transplant. After struggling in previous years with heart failure it was lovely to be able to enjoy it once again. Char

Thanks for this it’s made me feel a bit better do you just take it easy when going in so the cold water isn’t too much of a shock !

The med in September is usually ok temperature wise, not too cold at all but I don't swim out like I used to I always stay within my depth and only for a short while. I really enjoy it I'm not a swimming pool person I love the sea 🏊😀char

I went back to swimming earlier this year after heart bypass. I waited 12 weeks after the operation before my first swim and managed 5 very slow lengths. 7 months on and doing 30 lengths at moderate pace twice a week. I am 77years old and for me swimming is my favoured method of exercise.
