I had a lot of migraine after going to hospital for AVR. Answer was simple for me. After the op I returned to taking Clopidogrel and migraines ceased.

Just a thought.

Hi. I had these too! It was mitral valve surgery in my case. I looked it up and I believe it is a known side effect of open heart surgery, to do with time spent 'on the pump' when the heart lung machine breathes for you during surgery. I had really intense visual auras at first that have gradually lessened over time. I still get them occasionally, but thankfully without pain. Hope your husband's ease also.

I had a mitral valve replacement back in June last year and am still suffering optic migraines from time to time now. They typically start with zigzags in one eye, then both for 20 mins or so - then am left with a headache for the remainder of the day. I wld also say that my vision hasn’t been as sharp post op either.

I believe this was down to being on the bypass machine for too long. (My surgery lasted for about 7 hrs and I didn’t suffer with migraines prior to my op).

I also have issues with my I.N.R being all over the place and have noted that the headaches seem to be more frequent if my blood is too thick.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be much research undertaken, looking into the connection between these type of headaches post surgery and being on a pulmonary bypass machine for a long duration. So no helpful answers! Wishing your husband a speedy recovery.
