I have been given this drug for high cholesterol as I can’t tolerate statins. Only been taking it a week and feel terrible. Basically like flu. Bit of a sore throat and runny nose and body aches. Anybody else taken this drug and got any advice please

thank you. I have spoken to pharmacist and they suggest carry on for another two weeks. Just wondered if it had happened to anyone else

Hi, I was prescribed statins but instead tried Berberine (a natural product) which had several positive peer-reviewed trials to show that it worked as well, and in some cases better than statins, for lowering cholesterol. 3 months later I got my bloods done and the cholesterol levels was way down, and it was only then I said to the doctor that I didn't fancy being on statins. He thought I was still taking them, and his response was along the lines of... but they're doing a great job, so why would you want to discontinue with them. I then told him that I hadn't ever been taking them, and at first a stunned silence, then he mumbled something about he felt I should still be on them, and that was the end of that conversation. Still on Berberine and still have a low bad cholesterol and a good high good cholesterol. Just my own experience. Everyone's different.

Statins do two things. First they reduce lipids. But secondly and importantly they also stabilise existing plaque so it doesn't break off and cause blockages leading to strokes and heart attacks. So although you have apparently got one thing under control, you may not have the other under control, and so it is possible that not all of your risk has been reduced as far as practicable. And if you take other medication I assume you discussed taking berberine with your GP since it is apparently known to interact with some.
