Bit scared, actually

Diagnosed with high BP, high triglycerides and high non-hdl yesterday. Doctor told me to stop smoking now, stop alcohol, reduce salt, exercise three times a week and take statins and bp meds.

I was told that although my ecg was normal, my bloods showed I was worryingly close to a cardiac event.

I feel scared but hopeful. I've never really taken any notice of warnings before, almost as though they weren't real.

How real is this stuff?

You really don’t want a cardiac event, really.

You’ll have to do all of those things and more, should you survive it.

Heed your doctors warning!

I’m female and had a very serious heart attack at 51. Never smoked, rarely drank alcohol, but my lifestyle was sedentary with pre diabetes. I never thought a heart attack would happen to me but it did. I’ve since learnt that I have a genetic problem with my blood which makes the “bad” LDL cholesterol more sticky and narrows my arteries sooner than others of the same age. That, combined with an acutely stressful period was what probably triggered the heart attack. I can do anything to change my genetic risk factors, but I can control how much exercise I do and what I eat, so I try to focus on that. It’s a battle in my head most days and as I have a sweet tooth it’s difficult, but I do it as I know I would never want to repeat the experience again. Please listen to your doctors and make those changes now.

Welcome to the club that no-one wants to join. The advice you have been given is standard stuff for individuals with potential and known cardio conditions (as well as those without) . And you haven't mentioned body weight management and a 'healthy' diet which may or may not apply to you, but are also included as well as the others. These measures are recommended to reduce your risk of a cardio event like a heart attack, and the more you do the more the risk is lessened, although there is no guarantee it won't happen. Whether you choose to follow any or all of the advice is down to you, no one else, given it may affect your current enjoyment of life, but if you do suffer a cardio event the result may be significantly long term life changing to your detriment or even fatal.

adding to what’s been said - which is all absolutely on the nail - the website to go to for advice and help is Blood Pressure UK. They do have a helpline if you want to ring them, but read the website advice first.
