Hi M husband at the moment is in hospital with acute uti. He has taken nitrfurition for 2 weeks followed by intravenous Trimethropin not sure wether spelt write . The hospital are saying his urine is infection free but he is still getting fevers any advice would be appreciated.

I hope he’s soon home and feeling better. Maybe it’s a kidney infection that isn’t yet resolved. Due to nature of anatomy female uti tend to be from outside and ascend to kidneys but men tend to descend from kidneys to outside, if that makes sense, can be a longer journey to clear. I have to take a daily nitrofurantoin or I get symptoms so he has my every sympathy. All the best and take care 🦊x
I have some personal experience of recurring male urinary infections (UTIs) and understand that there are several tests for UTIs, the simplest being the dip test, which presumably means there are several different bacteria that can cause an infection and as I found out some respond to any one antibiotic and some don't. I ended up on Ciprofloxacin which is apparently the strongest antibiotic that can be prescribed for UTIs and fortunately that worked for me. So whilst the urine tests your husband has taken all show negative for infection it is hoped that they have been comprehensive enough to pick up all the bacteria that can cause an infection. But if they have exhausted all the tests then the only conclusion must surely be that it isn't a UTI it must be something else.
Yes I hope so this was just nurse testing it after emptying catheter bag. Hes still getting fever so for me there is some thing else in body that is causing infection. Thank you for your reply
If your husband was catheterised before admission to hospital, either intermittent or indwelling, or has had any prior recent form of internal examination or procedure through the urethra, there is very good chance of picking up a UTI. That's how all mine have occurred. And now if he is catheterised the risk is definitely there but may be unavoidable.
No he had catheter put in when admitted to hospital so that they could monitor blood for clots etc.
Good morning lindyloo59. Your husband is in the best place to get this sorted out. I had a bad utility. Had 2 lots of antibiotics and still not right. So I had 5 days in hospital on a drip to sort the problem out. Hope he feels better soon and is home. Brian

Yes things tend to come together. I also have chronic Kidney disease so it wasn't good for me or my egfr having a water infection because your Kidney function goes down and doesn't usually recover. Brian
I had one post surgery pre "what we must not mention" that was caused by lack of hygiene when a catheter was inserted. I was sent home with horse antibiotics (cane remember that name now). What I did find was that lemon barley water helped relieve the symptoms.
I am sorry to hear that your husband has been hospitalised with a uti. My father also had a few which required hospital treatment. The fevers did make him delirious at times and it was a bit scary. He did recover and actually couldn’t recall the times he had the fevers but they did linger longer than the original uti and he was a bit weakened after for a while but made recoveries.
I hope your husband is soon recovered, what has the hospital said about coming home , if anything yet?
When he is home he probably needs to make sure he is having plenty of fluids, gradually throughout the day rather than just a a big amount at one go (obviously and importantly, subject to anything you are told at the hospital/other medical conditions) . You can buy water bottles which have indicators on the side as to how much to drink each hour to pace the fluid intake well. It’s undoubtedly a nuisance as it makes one need the loo more but that’s inevitable.
D-mannose is often recommended and it might be worth checking whether this is something he could take in future to prevent a recurrence .
As a footnote my father went on to live many more happy years and died at home at 94.

Thank you for your kind comments no day for coming home yet. He takes warfarin and they stopped it and have started him on heparin as introducing warfarin again could cause blood clots. He has an artificial heart valve and pacemaker so its quite worrying.
I understand how worried you must feel. He is in good hands and they have dealt with these problems before.
Hopefully they will get him well on the road to recovery and with his meds properly sorted before they start to talk about sending him home.
Stay as well as possible yourself , take good care of self, do eat and sleep properly. If you have family or friends to support you, please let them help when they can.
