Infection harvest site. Diabetic

Hi there all :)

My dad is 21 days post quadruple bypass surgery.

He is doing fairly well however we thought his harvest site (leg) may be infected a few days ago. It is now day 4 of the antibiotics and the wound seems to be worsening.

He is diabetic and often has difficulty with wounds not healing as well as they should.

Any advice?

He is understandably very anxious about going into the hospital again due to the current situation.

Looks infected but I am not medically trained but I would call 111 for medical advice. Hopefully Michael JH will pick up this post he is best placed with his experience to offer better advice

Hi.. I am time limited as I have been on hospital transport for a podiatry appointment and just waiting to be seen.

I seriously do not like the look of it and feel it needs to be looked at by a medical professional. After my amputation my wound reopened four times. On one occasion as oral antibiotics were not working I was put on an intravenous one which usually means hospitalisation. As you will know with diabetes circulation in the lower limbs can be an issue so it is important this is sorted now! How long has he been diabetic and is he Type 1, Type 1.5 or Type 2? Regardless of the Type he must aim for good BG control. If he is Type 2 without a meter

Part 2...

Sorry was called in so hit send so my response was not lost!

If he is Type 2 without a BG meter I would definitely invest in one as it is worth the money at this stage. Do keep us updated.

My podiatry was rather worrying as they found an infection under my big toe nail. I have to go back in a week.

Best wishes Michael, I hope they can sort the issue out ASAP. Needless to say that you've no doubt learnt quite a lot from last year and will therefore use that knowledge to hurry things along!

Assuming Drs have already been consulted and will continue to be involved, I'd also start treating this myself. My hubby is type 1 diabetic, and sometimes he's slow to heal, whenever he has anything I'm not happy with I always use medical grade Manuka honey on it! I use Activon medical grade Manuka honey, you can get it as a tube of honey and you can buy dressings .I also dabble with homeopathy, and I'd definitely recommend getting a consultation with a homeopath ( most are doing online consults)

Hi, I am 63 days post my quad bypass same op as your Dad, (but I’m not diabetic). I do not recall seeing in my case anything like the wound in your picture so I would act quickly.

Like everyone else I also think that looks infected so you should seek medical help/advice for your Dad at the earliest.

Wishing him well.

That needs seeing to. Please don't be afraid of going to a&e. The covid patients are kept well away from others. Wear a mask and take your own sanitiser to use after touching door handles, etc.
