I had a heart attack last March 2022 and I am now concerned because I have swollen ankles for the first time. I take Ramipril and Atorvastatin, would these tablets be the cause of swollen ankles? Anyone else experiencing the same problem? Many thanks

swollen ankles
To my knowledge, neither of them cause swollen ankles, but I could be wrong. Just a thought, when did you notice these swollen ankles? It has been on the hotter side today with the weather, could that have perhaps caused it?
I hope others come along to help.
All the best.

Hello
I would not get worried it could be the heat water retention maybe but if it is regular and they are still swollen when you have elevated them which you should or after been in bed then I would see your Doctor just to get it checked out
Let us know how you get on x
Hi, I'm on the same medication as yourself, I too was getting swollen ankle only on my left hand side I would come and go ...I've put it down to me going back to work my job involves a lot of walking.I wouldn't be worried.
Hi there just to say l am on rampril and sometimes my ankles swell l belive its the tablets..
The heart not working efficiently affects the kidneys which in turn causes the body to retain water, hence the swollen ankles. I am not saying this applies to you, but it is a possibility.
Hi, Tombow,
I also had a HA in March 2022–the 24th—one week after I had had my annual checkup. It came as a surprise.
I think that several people gave possible reasons for swollen ankles. I get these too, but mine began well before my HA. I have taken HCTZ for my water/fluid retention, but be careful as diuretics can cause kidney damage. I am now trying a one day on diuretics and one day off schedule to try to give some relief to my kidneys.
I would definitely discuss this problem with your doctor. Swollen ankles are not a normal condition, and if this is occurring daily, then it may signal other medical problems. I know that it feels uncomfortable and, sometimes, even painful.
I hope that you can get this swelling under control and feel better soon. 😊
Hi Tombow
Sorry to hear about your heart attack.
I’m on 40mg of Atorvastatin and 5mg Ramipril and I don’t get swollen ankles. It’s always worth contacting your doctor to put your mind at ease.
Hope you get sorted.
Only a suggestion, but I noticed similar swelling when I was wearing walking boots (which tend to be higher than shoes). Put it down to tighter laces as the swelling receded when I moved to elasticated shoes.
Hi Tombow, I had a heart attack in November 2023. I take the same medication as you and on occasions my ankles swell up and I get dis colouration in my legs and feet. It really worries me so I went to my gp who did some blood tests and assured me everything was okay. The situation comes and goes so I just try to get on with it. I overthink everything since my heart attack and worry constantly that something is wrong.
I hope you are doing better and others have sent you their experiences.
Take care
Fluid around your heart or in your lungs could be responsible for swollen ankles or some medications .When I have had this the GP has prescribed a small dose of a diuretic which seems to work. But I would not accept it as a permanent feature. My doc. has always said swollen ankles are not acceptable.Cardio agreed. So get rid of it if you can.I only give you advice from my own experience. I am not a medic, well only of cats and dogs!
I’m on the two medications as you (plus others) and don’t get swollen ankles. If I were you I would report any new symptoms to my doctor, you wouldn’t be wasting their time. As said by others, swollen ankles could be heat related but also related to possible heart or lung problems so it’s a good idea to get it checked if it’s new for you. I take a low dose (12.5mg) of spironolactone daily as I developed heart failure after my heart attack last year. Like you, I also thought my heart attack was acid reflux, how wrong I was!!
Tell your GP, it shouldn’t be the meds but could be something else which needs treating.
