I have to drink decaf tea, even one regular can send my heart crazy! And I feel short of breath, tired sick, and my mouth goes purple π€·ββοΈ. Hope your get on better with decaf then regular x
My Afib. is permanent and erratic .Not in a class where(now)I am going to hospital because I misread the signs for a heart attack.Since those distant days, prob. 10 years or so, I have avoided caffeine .I can only say I think my Afib would be much worse if I took caffeine so it is decaff. tea and coffee for me and about twice a week i have a home made caffeine cappuchino.
Thank you for your help , Iβm changing to decaf as we speak because Iβm convinced that my wild beats are from coffee and possibly eating too fast with a hiatus hernia ππ
Iβm a fast eater too unfortunately. I Eat like a competition eater but not the big amounts like they do. I donβt chew things properly.? My food enters my stomach not chewed properly.!! Iv ate like this since been a child and I donβt know why.? Iβm not greedy for big amounts at all but anything I eat has 3 chews and itβs swallowed.!!
My husband says to chew each mouthful 32 times. Yeah right. There's no way I can hold food in my mouth that long. He can't drink coffee since he had his bypass.
You know what Iβve always eaten fast too, as if the plates going to be snatched away so now I take my time and chew tiny amounts ππππ Iβve spent most of my life being judged for what I ate and eight years ago finally got rid of that twit
Never was anyone so grateful to catch her partner with another lady ππππ but some habits are so hard to smash π₯
hi. I drink decaf all of the time (I buy decaf pods for my machine) and I donβt even notice the difference. I was told by a doctor a while ago that even drinking decaf tea 6 hours before bed is a no-no because your brain thinks itβs caffeinated anyway. I also drink decaf tea but get ringtons decaf as itβs the closest taste to normal tea. X
Hi , yes Iβve just order my pods gone are the days of pressure working drinking 10 cups a day π³ππ no wonder my ticker holds a party when it gets one cup ππ letβs hope it likes the decaf ππ
I know, I was never without a cuppa at work π. It kept me going. I donβt know which machine you have but I drink the nespresso arpeggio decaf. Iβm yet to find another thatβs as nice but I guess itβs all personal taste. Nespresso has seriously gone down hill in recent years so if you donβt have their machine I wouldnβt recommend buying one ππ
Hi , funny thing is 10 years ago I worked for Nespresso and the standards you had to maintain then were fantastic I even met George Clooney ππ and recently I went to one of their stores to look to buy a new machine was treated like dirt by the assistant in an un ironed shirt π€¨π€·π»ββοΈπππ needless to say I have tasimmo now ππ
Ooh lucky you meeting Gorgeous George, I hope he was lovely in real life too. Nespresso used to be amazing but now they are rubbish. My last machine was recently taken in for repair by them and then stolen. After much debate and threats that I would report the theft, they replaced it. I had to email the CEO to get anywhere too. Xx
Hi hazel, iv cut everything out this last week and drank only water and Iβm back at it with the ectopics.!!! They calmed down recently but are back with a vengeance today.! Iv had as many as 6 a minute at worst.!! Iv left a message with arrhythmia nurse this morning for some advice/ reassurance? And unfortunately heard nothing. I know theyβre not going to kill me but i feel im slowly slipping down the getting worried road.? Iv no pain, shortness of breath, or feeling poorly but im really hoping they stop soon.?π
Interested in reading your post and drinking water. I went on to warm water back in the spring when it looked as if my kidneys were playing up. After tests it seemed it was all a passing blip but I got used to the warm water and now drink more warm water instead of tea or coffee.
hi , have you looked at Dr Gupta , York cardiology on you tube his videos are very helpful in explaining many types of heart palpitations etc and why they are not life threatening ( easy to say when itβs not you I know ) but he does give a lot of sensible reassurance and other links like relaxation for the vagus nerve etc maybe one of them might help as a lot of our practitioners , clinics etc are having to see us so quick they donβt get chance to explain at length , good luck I hope yours gets better x
Hi hazel, yes I have watched some today so as to try and calm my mind.? Dr Gupta has a very good knack of reassuring me when my head is going south.? Iβd love to meet him just to say thankyou π
Could you please link me to this particular video? My heart rhythm is all over the place since surgery and think I would find itreally useful to have the different types of issues explained. Thank you!
Dr Gupta York cardiology in the YouTube search bar he will come up straight away, also try how to do a Vagus nerve massage , itβs really quick easy and helps relax you π
Yeah , thatβs my Lou , sheβs starting to get on now 13 but sheβs my mate although Iβm sure she thinks I live with her not the other way around π
She looks a lovely cat. Iv got an old lady cat called jet. Sheβs 16 and loves a daddy cuddle. She lays on my chest snoring while I massage her head.β€οΈ
Hi Hazel1010, I drink decaf and have the Lavazzo capsules. I honestly canβt tell the difference. I can highly recommend. I very occasionally have βnormalβ coffee but seldom. I hope you can enjoy decaf. βΊοΈ
I gave up having coffee for many weeks following my HA in March 2022. This was very difficult as I have used coffee since I was a teenager, but I felt so poorly that I thought that this action was best for me.
I have been back drinking my coffee for several months now. I usually have one cup following breakfast. I make sure that I have food and medicine prior to the caffeine. I then usually have one, possibly 2, extra cups per dayβseveral hours between each.
I do sometimes notice skipped beats/palpitations after having coffee, but I feel that I have given up a whole lot so far anyway. For example, I still have an unopened bottle of wine in my fridge that someone had gifted me shortly before my HA.
Of course, I may feel at some point that I need to stop all coffee, but I hope that day is not too close. On the positive side, I have heard several people say that they cannot taste any difference with decaf. I hope that you can sort out what is best for you. π
Thank you π I couldnβt admit I was an anxiety person but I now realise Iβm and I think that has added to it massively and Iβm still on couple of cups of coffee but changed to decaf π
Decaf coffee is fine, Iβve been drinking it for 13 years since dr told me to give up caffeine. Good news is there are some really good ones that taste just as good as the ones with caffeine. I drink that, decaf tea or coffee.
I drink decaf, thereβs some lovely blends so itβs a yes. There are some health benifits to coffee but that doesnβt include caffeine so decaf is a good bet.
I stick with decaf coffee but found the only one that tastes like the βrealβ thing is kenco decaf and any dulce gusto decaf pods are nice. Othe brands are available -not advertising lol. Gin is my worst enemy regarding trigger factor to set my heart off. Woah is me! Take care π¦xx
Hi there. I too gave up caffeine a few years back now. I drink decaff tea. It tastes the same as regular tea. I did get on well with decaff coffee but then it started making me feel sick so gave that up. I just stick with the tea now. Chocolate sets mine off sometimes aswell.
Caffeine is a cause of my BP and ectopics, I minimise my caffeine intake by a very occasional decaf coffee or hot chocolate, I very rarely drink alcohol for the same reasons. As an aside if you ever take Ibuprofen that can set off an irregular heart beat or even arrhythmia.

Decaff coffee is much milder and rarely has the same taste as full strength so you may need to experiment. If you drink ground coffee most are rayed 3 but the Coop have one rated 4.
Hi I was a bit dubious about swapping to decaf tea and coffee but it really has helped the ticker. Much like others here choosing a decent decaf coffee is pretty easy but getting a decent decaf tea is much more difficult. I tried lots and ended up with Twinnings decaf tea. But I see Anon2023 rates Ringtons decaf tea so reckon Iβll give them a whirl and see what they are like. Whilst Iβm sure there are downsides to drinking decaf products Iβm sure there are as many issues with the fully caffeinated alternatives so unless you want to drink just hot water which a few folk do give decaf a bash it certainly has helped in my case.
I suffer from AF and drink decaf coffee and tea and find itβs fine no big deal . If you think about it why get addicted to something thatβs bad for you. Itβs like this rubbish that people believe about alcohol is good for you π
I switched to decaf coffee about a year ago after I was told it can cause problems if you drink too much. I was drinking too much of the stuff anyway. I found that I now sleep better and if I have an ordinary coffee now, boy do I know about it. All I can say is give it a try, I use a well known brand which comes with a green label, but it is all down to your personal taste.
I changed to decaf coffee when I was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect about 20 months ago. I've since had OHS and a pacemaker fitted and haven't switched back to caffeine. The decaf is just as good as far as I'm concerned π
I switched to decaf almost as soon as I was disnosed with HOCUM about 12 years ago. It does make a difference. Also if you drink fizzy drinks you might find the same effect from drinking coke, I found that the caffeine free is far better for my symptoms (I get light palpitations as part of my condition). Can't give up coffee, its just too good!
I love my proper bean coffee. I hunted around various decaf options and the one I like I buy online from Drury Tea and coffee. Coffee taste is quite personal though so I suggest you persevere and I am sure you will find a match. I found looking for a good decaf tea was harder but have that sorted now too. Good luck.
I still have one espresso a day to start my engine but have cut out caffeine for the rest of the day. We went on holiday and had caffitiere coffee and that was 4 days of ectopics. Cheaper coffee tends to have more Robusta than Arabica and hence more caffeine. Iβm suspicious that caffeine is boosted in instant coffee to help it sell.
Hello, I too cannot tolerate caffeine - my heart goes crazy if I do. We get on fine together with decaf coffee and tea, but I realise everyone is different. Good luck - hope it works for you too.
Hi I donβt drink a lot of coffee but do enjoy a nice cappuccino. I changed to decaf after my triple bypass and honestly canβt taste the difference. Good luck and let us know your opinion πX
Yes, too much caffeine can have an effect on the heart eg, palpatations. I love my coffee too and hate decaf. Tip; I make cafe latte instead of my usual espresso.
Hazel, try green tea and I promise you that you won't miss coffee again. I used to drink 2 cups of black coffee everyday for 20 years, I used to get a headache if I did not have one by 11am and I stopped overnight and not because of any major problems, nothing to do with heart issues. I just didn't like the feeling it was giving me anymore, it made me hyper and alert and creative for exactly 30 mins and then a downer. Since I switched to green tea I have felt great, it gives you that gentle caffeine rise and it's gradual, just enough caffeine to not have a headache but not too strong. I have 2 a day and I will never go back to coffee. I just miss the smell of roasted coffee though.
Hello Hazel I have been using Decaf green tea for years and find it pleasant to drink, and occasionally have decaf normal tea if I am in a restaurant. I don't have any palpitaions etc with either. Hope you enjoy your green tea π
Hi Hazel I started having the same problem has you and was told by a doctor to go to decaff and I have had no problems since and that was 18 months ago
I have decaf coffee and tea and they are fine. I have a Nespresso machine so I contacted Nespresso to ask how decaffeinated their coffee really is (as it varies a lot) and they said there is only about 0.01% caffeine left.
Probably the one thing I do wrong after heart attack, stent, 3xCABG and occasional AF. I take the pills religiously, do lots of exercise, play sport, eat the right things, maintain a healthy weight and drink minimal alcohol. The only thing I've ignored? Don't drink coffee!
I gave up caffeine 2 years ago after ohs and even decaf gave me the skippity heart beats so I went cold turkey and now drink a black fruit tea with the merest hint of caffeine and that does satisfy my tea desires . I loved a coffee but after half a cup I was in a&e so that did put me off ever so slightly !! so now I just smell my husbands strong black coffee ( ahhhhh) and fondly remember headier days !! I do however drink loads more water at room temperature and thatβs had a dramatic affect on my tragic blood pressure so much so that Iβve had one lot of bp pills stopped !! I am now evangelical about drinking water ! And quite the bore about it !!! Water water and more water !! Good luck with the decaf - wish Iβd met George !!!
Hello again! Before you completely give up the caffeinated coffee, try and make sure it βcleanβ coffee AND, what you put in it. Donβt know if you have access to organic blends of coffee in the UK, and I suspect you do, this is the type you should buy.
I make my caffeinated coffee with a blend of Ghee, MTC Oil and stevia and put it in a glass blender. Itβs a creamy blend and you wonβt get the over buzz.
That being said, caffeine generally can overstimulate an already stressed out person and create more PVCβs. There evidence to show however that 1-2 cups of coffee does not generally cause Afib. If I get PVCβs from caffeine, itβs usually later in the day but exercise can mitigate that. You can read his great articles at Drjohnday.com
I do switch back and forth between decafe and caffeinated to kinda keep those annoying PVCβs in check!
Also, if you can get this brand of tea where you are called Teeccino, youβll never go back to that boring off the shelf stuff again!!!
I've only drunk decaff for the last several years. Same with caffeine free coke and Sprite.
Yorkshire decaff tea used to be my go to but actually PG tips decaff doesn't seem to bad now. There's also a better range of 'boutique' decaff teas now.
As for coffee, Nespresso pods are the best decaff ones imo. So many independent companies out there make decaff pods for the machine whereas Tassimo were limited to Kenco and I got fed up.
I have had the illy decaff pods from Tesco and they've been great. Lavazza are also good.
Cafepod ones from Tesco and Amazon are good too. Little bit more bitter though.
Then there are the independent Nespresso ones to try. Blue Goose Coffee, Roar etc.. All have been good. So many independents for Nespresso it's worth shopping around.
The odd thing is I canβt take decaf tea or coffee with just milk but I can take a cafe latte decaf . I too was having crazy heart beats before I stopped normal tea but stress can also do the same forme
