What an unusual achievement. It says a lot about the skill of your cardiologist too. Well done on making it to the Guinness World Records Title Holder, that's truly amazing!

That's awesome! How old were you when you had the op? I was only 34 so I fully intend to break your record when I hit 80 and a half!! x

Bigscar in reply toMarmiteB

I’m still here don’t forget and I was 31 my story is on here somewhere.

Congratulations Bigscar.

I hope you have plans to celebrate!

Very well done to you and all the team/s of Cardiologists, GP's, Nurses and Technicions who have helped your survival journey.

We're very glad to hear you are still with us and we all wish you more years to come so that you can increase that record duration even further.

Thanks friend I will do my best, never thought I’d get here anyway .I can still play a tough game of walking football and really amaze myself.

Wow - thats good! ⚽I saw an advert last week somewhere for the first time ever about walking football & some other similar slow paced fitness classes- didn't pay much attention but I should go find out more. ⚽

Yes go give it a try but I’m 77 but still get pulled up for running. But if you want social contact it is brilliant. However it’s not as sedate as you think, but do go find out.

Brilliant stuff. What caused the heart problem in the first place and what sort of lifestyle changes have you made since your bypasses?

Bigscar profile image
Bigscar in reply todevonian186

Familia Hypercholestrolameia not sure of spelling but hope you get the gist.Bad diet when younger including lard and eggs. Yes I made changes but I take a lot of drugs statins obviously have helped.Still try to keep fit and at 77 still amaze myself at what I am still capable of.

What an absolutely brilliant post, congratulations!

Virtually all the other contenders for your title had multiple episodes of bypass surgery, roughly every fifteen years or so when their grafts wore out and had to be replaced with fresh grafts via new operations. But if my memory serves me right you're doubly amazing in that you're still on the original; grafts. Have I got that right?

Once again, congratulations on a wonderful record!

Bigscar in reply toChappychap

Yes taken from my right leg, vaguely remember them saying something about not taking to much because I would need some for another op later.

Even the surgeon said when first meeting him I would not be rid of this.Although not rid I’ve survived with one op touch wood.

Well done. Onwards and upwards to the big 50. I won't be challenging your achievement as I was late to the party at age 66 and my rearranged plumbing is still "running in".... 5 years and counting. 😀

All the best for the future,

Gerald

That is really great news and thank you for sharing it. Many people are frightened of having a by pass as they think it will only last for 10 years before they get problems again. The fact that you have had one for 46 years is brilliant.

Very pleased to hear this.I think you are actually quite important as anyone especially pre op is quite daunted and someone like you can easily be pointed at- look that guys still here!

We are all afraid and want positive examples of what can be achieved, and so it turns out that you are the living embodiment of hope.

It sounds like you are a happy busy guy, and if you could gift anyone with an extra 46+ years then why not someone prepared to grasp it with both hands as you have? I suppose the big one is 50, and if Nike/Addidas/sports drinks/vitamin manufacturers had any brains they'd get in now with some sponsorship.Freddy Mercury asked who wants to live forever? It turns out most of us; and also prompts the thought if he can do it why can't I?

Congratulations so good to hear something so positive. I read your story when I had my surgery November 22 I was terrified but reading your story was an inspiration and gave me a real lift. I certainly won’t beat your record as I was 71 when I had my surgery but plan on being around for some time yet God willing. I feel so thankful and grateful to my surgeon and his team they are truly amazing. Best wishes stay healthy and be happy 😊X
