hi there! My 69 yo mum has been in hospital for the last week as her heart rate is too fast (roughly 117) she had a bit of swelling too which is now going down thanks to a diuretic. Her BP and oxygen levels are normal but all the medication they’re giving her to reduce the heart rate is causing the heart rate to go faster not slower … she is generally in good health but did have issues with her heart first a few years ago before being fine for three years.
Any ideas on what could be done (alongside what the doctors are trying) would be really appreciated!
Thanks so much and take care everyone x

I’m really sorry to hear your mum is in hospital at the moment.
I can’t really offer any advice but did want to say that you believe your mums meds are making her heart rate go faster instead of making it slower. It might be useful to name the medications she is taking and others who have experience with this might be able to give you more specific related experiences with these.
I really hope she feels better soon and can come back home.
Thank you so much for your extremely kind words and support - it means a lot!
She's doing ok thank you and is in good spirits! She was given a variety of beta blockers like bisupropol that caused her heart rate to increase rather than decrease. Then she was given amioderone as a last resort (I googled and was quite worried about the side effects) which she tolerated for 24 hours before waking up last night in the night feeling awful - no massive emergency but she hasn't had another dose today because of it. However it did bring her heart rate down!
They are now talking about pacemaker or ablution operations which she wants to go away and think about. BP normal, temperature and oxygen levels normal and she's had lots of blood tests and ECGs to rule out other issues. The doc seems to think this has been "triggered" by something probably stress related which she and I agree with. (There's been a bit of family stress recently and she's quite sensitive to these things.) Also looking into accupuncture and reflexology sort of as a last resort
I wondered if anyone had any other bright ideas that had worked for them, or any views on pacemakers or ablutions?
With so many thanks and this is all so much appreciated!
