Rosuvatatin fatigue

Hi. I was on avortastatin amongst the other stuff but was suffering constipation. I was changed in january to Rosuvastatin. (The constipation didnt change.. ) since the end of january i have been exhausted and my health has declined . Muscles ache all over and head aches and ringing in my head. It gets worse if i do any exertion. I was running 5km parkruns in december in 23 mins, now i dobt think i could walk round the course. I tried to get GP appointment for 2 months, but im working full time and all the appointments get snapped up. I read up on side effects for Rosuvastatin, and in rare cases this can produce the symptoms i have. I got a telephone appointment on friday and my gp has arranged some blood tests, so hopefully it will show something up. If not i am going to stop taking the statins. I am also on ezetimibe. Im very disheartened. Last year i was running 15 miles no problem and after my stents had got back to running 7 miles ok. Has anyone else had an experience with rosuvastatin?

Dear You,

So sorry that you are having problems with the statins that you have been placed on.

There are other forms of this medication that may help you return to a better level of fitness

Until you find out please don't stop the statin as they do more than just cholesterol levels.

I really understand your frustration , but please take it from one that will never be fit again like he was, that it is worth trying alternatives first.

The constipation is pretty standard on most statins but there are plenty of things that can help you , mention it to the Dr at the same time, I just upped my fiber intake, easy and effective.

Most of all you are not alone, it is a mental battle as well as a physical one and your main trigger seems to be a fitness level one, maybe its time to measure your wonderful life differently

Take care

Hi,

I too suffer from constipation, taking 50mg of Tramadol, taking it twice a day at present, but sometimes up to four times when the pain in my spine requires it, and taking 80mg Atorvastatin is a double wammy. However I also use Lactulose oral solution, 15 ml twice a day, which in the most part does ease the burden. This is available on prescription so just ask your GP. Constipation can be very painful, and can impact on when you just want a wee, because your bowels can become swollen and press on your bladder. Also eating plenty of fruit helps, we have a bowl of fresh fruit every teatime, usally banana, grapes, satsumers and plums, or any fruit that is available. I also put about ten prunes in a small pot of yogurt after lunch, which again helps with the problem.

I hope that this is of some use to you, it certainlyhelps me.

yours,

Bludnut

Hello :-)

When you say constipation to someone they seem to just look at you with a look like so what yet it can be awful to deal with and makes you so miserable I have IBS and with all these meds I take it now plays havoc

I am sad to read you feel so disheartened but can understand why you would but keep going because they will get to what is causing this and the blood tests might throw something up and maybe you could get an appointment for a med review if the blood tests come back ok

Let us know how you get on but know where you are at the moment and how you are feeling is a bump in the road but one you will get over where life feels a lot better :-) x

I actually found Resouvastatin suited me the best …but thats just for me. I think it was the fourth statin I tried. GP was fine about trying different ones. Do persist, until you get one that works for you better.

was on Rosuvastatin when it came out first and it was the only medication that really ran me down physically, causing tiredness and body aches. I switched to another statin and never had a problem so I would see your GP soon as. I rarely get any side effects from medication but that statin was really the exception.

If atorvastatin was ok, just go back to it or try simvastatin. If you've already had stents it's unlikely that lifestyle alone will lower your cholesterol. Don't just come off it without talking to your GP. I couldn't tolerate atorvastatin at all but simvastatin is fine. I just had a blood test to see if statins were affecting an enzyme that muscles need as my normal pain had got much worse but i t's not the statin causing it.

Thats what ive decided. I walked 1.5 miles tonight with the dog and it was like ive aged 20 years, so slow and now im exhausted. I did my blood tests today, results on friday. Im going to stop the rosuvastatin and start back on avortastatin tomorrow. I just feel this is killing me. Thanks for your comments.

Good luck. It could take about 3 weeks to get the full effects of rosuvastatin out of your system or so my GP told me. There's no reason to put up with something that's affecting you so badly.

I suggest give up Rosuvastatin just for a week and see if it makes any difference.

Rosuvastatin was my 5th statin. All made my joints constantly ache with no relief to the extent I eventually couldn’t sleep. I lurched from either them causing me diarrhoea or chronic constipation. Yes you can take a laxative but constipation also steals your appetite and saps all the life out of you. I tried the fibrate alternative, but cholesterol raised. So now trying another alternative in injection form.

Thanks so much. I too have pain that stops me sleeping and the constipation i had was also grim. As you say, it saps the life out of you. Best wishes on your journey.

I was on Atovastatin and it gave me terrible joint pains. My Cholesterol was 9.2. The Dr told me to stop them and a couple of months later I suffered a STEMI. I'm now on 10mg of Rousuvastatin and Bempedoic Acid. My cholesterol is now down to 3.0. I do however get joint pains but it's better than having another heart attack. I jog 3-4k 3 times a week. I also ride my bike to work daily. I would definitely recommend sticking to medication and a healthy lifestyle than the alternative. I wish you well.

So i have been off the rosuvastatin for 25 days now., with the support of the cardiac rehab nurse. I got a thorough set of blood tests and everything is nominal. The difference is hugely significant. I no longer have fatigue and i am back walking and now running. I did 5 miles tonight at about 10 mins/mile pace. I did my parkrun on saturday in 26:10, without pushing it. Of course im not as fit as i was, since i have missed 4 months due to fatigue but im feeling good and definitely feel better each day. I have a further review in a few weeks to look at my cholesterol, which is still a bit higher than they would like. Thanks for all the support!
