Reaction to ecg lead stickers from CPET yesterday

Yesterday I had a CPET , in preparation for having the heart monitor leads attached they used a very coarse wipe to clean the areas where the stickers go to enable the best connection , it was like having sandpaper rubbed on my skin . Anyway my skin felt a bit sore where I had the stickers placed and I’ve now got some very angry looking red marks like shown , the ones on the front of my chest are much more red and sore . Just wondered if anyone else has had a reaction to the wipe or stickers after a CPET ?

Dear you,

Sorry you have had that reaction, looks nasty but hopefully it will go, just a line to say that I'm glad you had your test done.

Take care x

You can ask for stickers for sensitive skin. I have had them many times as I used to get the red areas like you have.

Thank you , I had a 7 day holter monitor a few years ago and the stickers caused tiny very painful blisters , I had to go back to hospital to get stickers for sensitive skin which helped but I didn’t think having these on for the duration of the test ( only around 40 minutes ) would cause this reaction

When I had my last holter monitor, it made me bleed when the stickers were removed and the areas were sore for about a week!

The sandpaper stuff does seem to really aggravate my skin - I use e45 afterwards to help soothe the skin 🙂

Hope it heals quickly for you 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Best wishes

Thank you , I had the sane problem when I had a 7 day holter monitor but didn’t think I’d have a problem as it was only around 40 minutes I had the monitor on . I’ve been using e45 but areas are so itchy it’s annoying .

How many days is the heart monitor on for the worst marks it's leaves on me is when it's been on for 7 days 😭, ahhhh so sore and raised up aswell also happens when I have a blood test think I just have an allergy to the plasters. I’d only had the heart monitor on for around 40 minutes while doing the CPET test , when I had a 7 day holter monitor I ended up needing to go back to the hospital to get stickers for sensitive skin and I ended up with painful tiny blisters .

Yep me too. I've had really large red sores where the stickers were. Coated them with savlon and they calmed down in a couple of days.

After my heart attack had to wear an heart rate monitor while in hospital had red welts from the stickers nurses noticed this so changed them for hypoallergenic ones skin then settled down.

Hope that helps Westie2012

Thank you for your advice , I needed to get the stickers for sensitive skin when I had a bad reaction to the first stickers from a 7 day holter , I didn’t think I’d have a problem from the short time I had the monitor on for the test .

Have you tried an antihistamine cream or tea tree. I find them good for itchy skin or even E45s Anti itch cream.

That looks nasty, Westie - hope it clears up soon. I find E45 cream to be a great comfort for any sort of rash (even nettle stings) and always keep a tube at home. When I was a blood donor I always found the opaque surgical tape they use to stick the cotton wool pad over the needle site gave me a horrible raised sore rash and had to ask them not to use it anymore.

Good morning....rather than the wipes, could this be a reaction to the sticker pad?......only saying as I get the same reaction also with the rash and itching with sticking plasters. Hope it clears soon for you

Yes I have had same reaction as that twice, other times have been fine I think it may be down to who manufactures the pads and the adhesive they use because both reactions were at the same hospital.

I know exactly what you’re going through. I have the same reaction, in fact my skin once blistered after pads were removed after a Holter. The last time I had a Holter fitted I asked them not to scrub the skin first and just put the stickers on. I was advised they needed to get a ‘good contact’ and it may affect the readings but it turned out fine. I was still left with marks like yours but no blisters.

hydrocortisone cream, pharmacy own brand fine, will sort anything like that out.

Always and I also usually come up in blisters from the Holter monitor. They do have some types of sticky pads that are supposed to be non allergy but to be honest I react to those too. I scratched so much the last time, all the pads fell off after 8 hours.

I didn’t get the wipe as I’m very reactive but just the stickers that were only on for a @20 minutes for the exercise stress test left angry red rings on my skin for three weeks

I’ve had that reaction in the pass. I’m also allergic to certain tapes they stick to hold wounds, so I have to tell them, and they understand, and use a different type.

hi. That looks very sore, I would agree with the suggestion to use Eurax. I’m allergic to one of the dressings that they use in hospital and also tend to get blisters with most adhesive dressings. They can use an adhesive barrier spray or wipe before sticking anything on you. It doesn’t interfere with the readings that they get. If you ever need further tests ask them for the barrier stuff first. The one they used on me was Medi Derma-S Total Barrier Film spray
