Starting Med Today

Took my first 2.5 mg of ramipril today. Does anyone have any experience to share with me. I've never taken any meds before other than the occasional antibiotic and prednisone for acute conditions. The list of side effects on the Mayo Clinic website are horrifying.

It can feel an anxious time when starting a new med and what do we do read the side effects as well as reviews well I do and by the time I have finished I am petrified and as soon as I take one I have every side effect that I read they can give !

I have to start a new tablet later for something else and trying to resist looking what it says

I have not taken what you have been given but read many positive posts from people that do take it which I am sure will reply when they come on

But remember we are all different so one person's experience may be totally different to someone else

I hope the Ramipril works for you. I was prescribed it after a heart attack and one stent. It didn’t suit me sadly- I came out in a rash amongst other side effects. There are alternatives if you suffer so don’t hesitate to ask for a different drug there are quite a few. I did read, not sure how true, that drugs ending in “ril” often provoke quite bad reactions…just so you know you wouldn’t be alone if it happens to you.

I had to come off it for the cough... but everyone reacts to drugs differently, same as with food and drink... you might tolerate it well!

Me too. I was coughing day and night. Making me literally sick. It's only because I looked on here that I found out that it's a common side effect. Took me ages to get rid of the cough, and I mean ages, but luckily completely gone now.

hi, I take 10mg Ramipril daily and don’t have any problems, have taken it for a few years.

The leaflets that come with medication are always scary, it’s a wonder that any of us take them !

I never did either. When I went into Hospital for a By-Pass, the Surgeon took me off them. I don't know why though. He must have had his reasons! 😔

I have been taking a variety of meds over a number of years and have experienced unwanted side effects from a couple of them. Don’t let that possibility stop you getting the benefits , alternatives usually exist if problems do crop up. Good luck.

when I had my daughter living with me if I was given a new med I asked her to read leaflet for me, I wouldn’t look, then if I felt any different symptoms I would tell her, then I wouldn’t have my imagination running riot, so if your lucky to have someone there with you try this 🤗

Hello, I’m on 2.5 Ramipril, alongside 5mg Amlodopine. I felt like you too but I was, and am, fine on the medication. I had no side effects at all. I know we are all different, but try and relax and go with the flow - hopefully you’ll be fine and will benefit from taking the tablet.

Ramipril gave me a dry cough that has never gone away after 2 years even though I’m no longer taking it. Good luck with it! I was switched to Losartan.

Hi 5mg of Ramipril gave me a dry cough after about a year of being on it with no issues. Switched to Losartan and cough went away after a few weeks. Hope you get on ok with it

I hesitated to reply as I have a genetic predisposition to react to medications, but I wanted to say a couple of things; first, even though there are side effects listed on the leaflet it just means that other people have reported them, and secondly, if you find they don't suit you there are alternatives available. I was given Ramipril and it didn't suit me, foolishly I didn't go back to the GP to say so, but later it became apparent I really needed this type of medication and a different one was prescribed, lo and behold, despite an even longer list of potential side effects they are perfect for me, absolutely no problems whatsoever.I really do understand how daunting it can be to start new medication, and there is no easy way, you have to try it to know if it is the right one for you, we are all different. Ramipril is the first one of choice for many doctors, in this family of medication, many, many people take it with no problem.

I was on 5mg of Ramipril for a few years and then the dose was increased to 10mg, on it for about 10 years, no side effects, no cough. I have since been diagnosed with Afib and meds changed so no longer on it.

I’ve taken ramipril for 2.5 years, with no side effects other than occasional ramipril cough at night (but as it’s occasional is it really due to the ramipril I wonder?) It brought my blood pressure down to a perfect level and once I got over the shock of my diagnosis and started to exercise (walking, then started running, now swimming as well) my BP reduced even more - cardiologist advised me to keep taking it due to its benefits for heart disease. I was initially really upset and stressed about having to take daily medication but now I don’t think twice about it, just part of my daily routine.

I've been on Ramipril amongst others for 18 months and apart from the cough problem at times no other no other side effects. Also no point whatsoever reading the side effects leaflets imo as they all seem to contradict each other, the classic being this drug may cause constipation or your may get the runs (I can't spell diorrohere)

All medications, (and even so-called natural supplements) will have side-effects. Let's face it, even foods can produce reactions! All meds, whether prescription or otc must have an accompanying list of side-effects, but this does not mean that we will actually get any of them. If we do, there is usually an alternative that can be prescribed, so always discuss any new symptom that develops after starting a new med with your doctor. Reading about the possible negative effects of a medication can produce a nocebo effect, so sometimes referring to the side-effect information after starting it, rather than before, can be a good idea if you are at all anxious. I'm sure you will be fine, but check any new symptoms you experience against the list, and discuss with your doctor regarding a possible change. Hope your new meds work well for you.

I never read any of the leaflets or warnings or I'd never take anything. I react very badly to a lot of tablets, usually to a colouring or a filler but never found out exactly what. The only way is to take it and wait and see without reading warnings or you could get a reaction that's purely psychosomatic. I was given ramipril which had no ill effects at all.
