adverse reaction to heart meds.

Hello all. After a mild heart attack at the end of July I was prescribed the common medication seemingly given to all patients. Since taking them I have been experiencing severe flatulence and explosive diarrhoea. It is really debilitating and affecting my life to the point where I am reluctant to make any arrangements to leave the house. Has anyone else experienced this? My GP has advised I continue with the medication until I see a cardiologist, unfortunately I have not seen anyone since my discharge and I have received a telephone appointment for 14th November. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for reading.

I blame Bisoprolol for the flatulence. All drugs can have side effects, and we all react differently. It's a balance between the side-effects and the benefits of the drug. Have you read the leaflets with the ones you are taking?

Thank you for replying to my post, much appreciated. I read all the leaflets relating to the various medications, there are more than one with side-effects that relate to myself. I suppose it is just trial and error, maybe tweaking the dosage or possibly an alternative medicine. I intend to ring the consultant”s secretary tomorrow to ask if he could give me a quick call and maybe some advice.

Hello :-)

Some Doctors can be reluctant to change our medications until we have been discharged but that does not help I know

It no doubt will be one tablet that may not be suiting you and not them all but you need to know which one it is or could be

The only thing you could do is phone your Consultants Secretary explain the situation and stress that you need to talk to someone sooner as you cannot wait till the 14th even if it just be a quick call you need to know what to do

Meanwhile while you are waiting you need to continue with the meds which I do feel for you but make that call and see if you can get something done quicker

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Thank you so much for the reply, much appreciated. I will ring the consultants secretary tomorrow and ask her to maybe get the consultant to give me a quick ring if possible. I will carry on taking the meds As I realise that I need them, I will just have to carry on unfortunately.

Hello :-)

I do honestly feel for you and I suffer with stomach issues so have an idea what you are going through

You can even say the Consultant does not have to phone you back just let you know which med it could be and what you need to do

Good Luck and I hope we see a positive reply from you soon that you managed to get it sorted :-) x

hello, I am taking Lansoprazole, Bisoprolol,Atorvastin,Aspirin, Ramipril & Ticagrelor. My GP is reluctant to change my meds, however I will ask him to maybe change to Omeprazole as I have been prescribed it in the past and had no adverse reaction.

I agree with what’s already been said. Lansoprazole. It did exactly the same to me. I now take enteric coated aspirin and try not to take Lansoprazole for that very reason. My doctor will not change normal aspirin for the enteric coated ones on the grounds of cost. They are not expensive so I buy them. I hope by having these enteric coated ones I will reduce stomache lining problems so I don’t need to take Lansoprazole. This is how I’ve dealt with 18 months of “ explosive diarrhoea “ . I hope you manage to get seen by your specialist quickly.

Like many others, I experienced stomach issues when I started taking the usual cocktail of drugs. I’ve no idea which one was the culprit but it eventually settled down.

Sometimes you just have to let your body adjust. Obviously if it lasts for months then your doctor may look at tweaking your medication. Good luck!

I agree with others that Lansoprazole is the likely culprit. Remember that it works by reducing stomach acid - so it seems to make sense (to me, at least) that it might affect digestion. I think all the ".......prazoles" will likely have the same side effect. I take 15mg lansoprazole daily and I was gassy and "loose" initially but it settled down after a while.

I agree that your doctor should look at adjusting your medication - and do a liver function blood test if you have not had one already. I had same symptoms as you until it was found I had live dysfunction in response to Atorvastatin.

Hi Backtotheblues,

As we all know, we are not allowed to give any medical advice on this forum, even though sometimes it is difficult not to. To say it will almost certainly be lansoprazole that is causing this reaction may not be wise, as it may not be this medication!? Always best for the person to seek medical advice from his/her GP. I take lansoprazole and am absolutely fine on it, but I do realise that for others, that is not the case.

I get bloating regularly and didn’t link it with omeprazole until now. I’m wondering if anyone knows if it’s necessary to take a ppi with heart meds such as bisoprolol, entresto and Dapagliflozin? I don’t have heartburn etc and have been taking omeprazole just to prevent stomach problems due to taking lots of meds for my heart. Obviously I’d speak to my gp before stopping it but interested in other peoples opinions.

Atorvastatin has flatulence and diarhoea as reported side effects and explains my flatulence (much reduced when my cardiologist reduced my daily dose from 40mg to 10mg and introduced ezetimibe and a hike in bisoprolol dose for other reasons - to counter an onset of mild/irregular arrythmia). I don't suffer diarhoea.

[Statin, ezetimibe, bisoprolol, clopidogrel and lo dose aspirin are my post bypass drugs].
