Orlistat

Following my heart attack last year, the hospital dietician have been watching my weight loss.

I have managed to drop 4.5kg but hit a brick wall in loss.

She has suggested trying Orlistat but reading the leaflet on what to not eat, limit etc and talking to various folk including the pharmacist at my local chemist, my understanding of the possible side effects seem horrendous.

Has anyone else used this medicine and your thoughts please.

Thank you

Hello :-)

Well done with the weight you have already lost sometimes I think with weight loss we can lose so much and then the loss slows down

I have not had any experience to be able to answer your question but just wanted to say how well you have done so far losing weight is never easy :-) x

Good morning, my GP put me on Otlistat 9 months ago. I take it only when I eat, if I eat something that does not contain enough saturated fats, excuse the statement, but I have to wear always discreet as my bottom leeks without and control orange liquid, and when on the toilet it comes out like water. If you prepare yourself and use something like always discreet boutique tou won’t have any unpleasant accidents. But aside from that Orlistat seems to be working although slowly. I have an under active thyroid and other medical issues so my diet is very limited. Good luck with them.

Thanks, you too but today; haircut good; tooth abscess NOT good; Internet speed dropped from 30Mbps to 3.4Mbps and cutting out just when I have an important Zoom Committee meeting. Been going on now for 8 weeks. Engineer booked which will be the 7th visit since Christmas. Sky doing their utmost but Openreach just can't find the fault. Phone sounds like someone eating a packet of crisps. One engineer spent 5 hours last Saturday replacing a cable down a manhole. It worked for almost 2 day s then went again. I wonder why my BP is up!

Well done on the weight loss so far. A cardiometabolic doctor and his dietitian consultant sidekick talked at me patronisingly over a conference call for 30 mins and then sent a letter to my GP asking them to start me on orlistat. Fortunately my GP was on the ball and asked about my exercise regime (training for the London to Brighton bike ride at the time) and said “well you won’t be able to do any long rides, or probably even short rides, on orlistat, as you’ll need to stay close to the toilet. I really don’t think it’s appropriate for you.”

You’re obviously doing the right things to have got so far. Hopefully you’ll get over your wall by other means. Good luck xx

hi well done on losing weight you have done amazing so far. I was on orlistat for a few months but found that the side effects were not worth the side effects for the little weight it helped move. Had to be on a low fat diet also. I have since moved to ozempic injections due to my diabetes which has gave me no side effects yet. Also struggling to lose any weight but on a very low doze just now so fingers crossed. Keep at it Thumper you will get there . X

I have used this in the past, never again

All I can say is, stay close to your toilet, be prepared to buy new pants, and don't take it if you plan to go out !!

The side effects (fully stated and explained on the box) are disgustingly unpleasant.

I lost over 6 stone in my weight journey,

without using Orlistat at all.

This product ts is NASTY.

You said about the dietician but you didn't say what changes you made to achieve the weight loss so far. Not a criticism, just explaining where I'm coming from. One of the most effective things I did was to reduce portion size, started removing 10%, gradually reduced it more and more till I was eating a third less. Weigh everything, don't guess. Salad is unlimited, but not dressings.

Apologies if you have already tried this.

If you feel hungry, clean your teeth. Try to incorporate moving more, if you hang washing on the line, take it out item by item, walk upstairs an extra time, take the plates to the sink one by one, all that sort of thing.

I find little tiny changes are easier to start with, and then to build on.

The very best of good luck, I know it's tough.

I used it a two or three years ago for a couple of months. Before diagnosis do I can't help with how links with medication but a) it did nothing for my wright and b) my strolls were very, very, VERY loose. I stopped taking it after an unfortunate accident of the kind I'd not had since being a toddler.

hi. I tried this years ago and I’d say that you need to be prepared for accidents. The weaker formula of orlistat is available to buy over the counter and is called Alli. Due to the side effects its nickname is Alli oops!! Be prepared to leak orange grease from your bottom. Not pleasant.

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for your comments.

As suspected from reading elsewhere, these seem to back up my thoughts.

I'll probably try them for several days but if things start falling out I may stop them whilst i will be in places or on trips which could lead to embarrassing situations.
