72 year old male. I have a history of Afib and CAD going back 7 years. Have had bypass and pacemaker fitted. I started loosing weight (unintended) and feeling exhausted about three months ago. I went from 79kg to 72kg in that time. Following blood tests I got an urgent call from my GP on Friday telling me to go straight to the Acute Assessment Unit in my local hospital. She told me that the bloods showed significant over activity of the thyroid. The specialist confirmed hyperthyroidism caused by amiodarone. I’m told the treatment can take months to work.
Has anyone out there experienced this and if so what was the outcome ?
I would love to hear from you.

I was about to be prescribed Amioderone by the hospital and had to tell the registrar I had thyroid problems so no Amioderone thank you. You may have had underlying problems before being prescribed and it hadn't yet been picked up.
Thanks for your reply. I’m glad you were spared the nasty experience of hyperactive thyroid brought on by Amiodarone. My thyroid had been within normal range a year ago but it seems to have shot up in a short time. The lesson is that frequent testing is important if you’re on Amiodarone
Amiodarone made my thyroid underactive and I'll now have to take medication for life to rectify that. I know someone who is on the AF forum on Health Unlocked who had an overactive thyroid treated and it has reduced his AF, may even have cured it can't say for sure. You should get some responses on that forum too.
