Have any of you had experience of taking Amiodarone to try to get out of AF? I’ve had 2 Cardioversions which worked short term (the last one for a week!). This medication is to try to get normal rhythm back so that a cryo ablation has a greater success rate. Waiting list for me is to July next year. Potential side effects are frightening. Has it worked for you? I’m down for another Cardioversion in 6 weeks if rhythm doesn’t right itself. Thank you in advance.

Amiodarone worked brilliantly for my husband. He took it for 3 years without a single side effect. I took it for a few weeks & it worked really well, but I felt awful & had several of the unpleasant side effects & was taken off it. Might be one of those things that you don’t know how it will work for you until you try it.

Yes, AF is a common side effect following any kind of open heart surgery, so lots of people on this forum will have had a few days or even a few weeks of Amiodarone after their surgery. In the great majority of cases this medication does what it's supposed to do, the AF ceases, and we subsequently don't need that particular drug anymore.
We all react differently to the medication prescribed to us. I personally found it highly toxic for me but it worked. I was taken off it as soon the side effects became apparent but others on this forum have had no ill effects. You can but try and monitor it. Good Luck.
Good luck, I am in the same situation as you, I don't like having to take all these meds but if they work, surely it's worth it. This is my 2nd week on Amiodarone & on Sunday I was in sinus rhythm for 1 day, first time in nearly 2 years
Wow! That’s wonderful! Are you feeling less tired? That’s what is the worse thing for me, not doing much before I feel shattered. Hope you stay in normal rhythm.
Thank you, my husband says he noticed I was more like my usual self. On Monday I went back into AF but when I checked on the Kardia app this morning I was in normal rhythm
It works extremely well for me - I’ve been on it for seven months. It’s improved my QOL so much I’m questioning whether I want to go for an ablation after all. Crossing my fingers that none of the dreaded side effects start emerging though!
I've been on it for 7yrs and have regular 3monthly blood tests. For the first 6yrs it worked well and I only had 2 short bouts of AF. Unfortunately it is no longer effective and I've been in AF for a year and am awaiting an ablation also. I'm still on it ahead of the ablation but if the ablation doesnt work for me, I'll come off it as there is no longer any point in taking it. As others have said, everyone reacts differently to different medication. Make sure your bloods are regularly monitored.
I was on Amiodarone for several weeks in preparation for a Cardioversion (my third- in 3 days time) but the side effects were too much to tolerate. I’m still experiencing them 2 weeks after ceasing taking it. Distended upper abdomen and a permanent feeling of fullness from waking up until bedtime with bowel movements continuing to be totally changed in colour and frequency despite reverting to my previous beta blocker Nebivolol.
