I’ve reapplied for my driving licence following ICD placement in August ‘22
Unfortunately I had a cardiac arrest and had to surrender my licence
My Cardiologist has filled in the Consdec form saying I meet all the conditions including timescales required to hold a Group I driving licence
I’ve just had notification from DVLA that my application is being dealt with by the Drivers Medical Group and it says I can drive while the application is being dealt with unless I am barred from holding a licence for medical reasons, it then says if I have any doubts consult my Doctor
If my Cardiologist has said I’m fit to drive can I?
The form I received today also says if I have been denied a licence on medical grounds I can’t drive, but I don’t really understand this. My licence was revoked, I’ve never applied for a driving licence and been denied one
Am I being dense?
I don’t know whether to just keep waiting or start back driving
What do people think?
Many thanks

My understanding is, if your medical team have given you the ok to drive & the DVLA have said it's ok subject to your medical team saying it's ok, then you can drive under section 88 of the RTA while you're waiting for the return of your licence. My husband lost his licence recently because of a VT storm & that's what I've been told. However, please don't take my word for it as we've not had to reapply for my husband's licence yet! There's a Facebook group call icd support -uk, there's lots of info there on about what you can & can't do. Highly recommend you join, 1) for support & 2) they're really highly knowledgeable about this sort of thing as most of them have gone through this.
There's also a cardiac arrest support group called sudden cardiac arrest support group which I'd also highly recommend joining. Having a cardiac arrest or witnessing someone having a cardiac arrest is one of the most traumatic things to go through & it's hard to come to terms with.
Both groups are very very friendly & very helpful & knowledgeable
Ps: my husband had his cardiac arrest 25 years ago!!
I think you're right that there are different rules for having your licenced revoked rather than surrendered. On the advice of the ICD group I mentioned, my husband surrendered his licence rather than wait for it to be revoked. Can I ask how your licence is revoked, is it the DVLA that that revokes it & if so, who tells the DVLA that you've had a medical episode?
