Hi everyone I’m considering going on a statin. Years ago I was on simvastatin but I was take off it by a cardiologist after he did my blood test, because in his words, it was affecting my bones. Recently my GP as been trying to get me to take it again but they’re not having any luck. I’m resisting.
What I would like to know is those in this group taking statins how they’re getting on with them, and the names of the statins. I will read and digest all comments.

Hi I've been on rosuvastatin for 5 years come April with no side effects.A doctor friend of mine once told me the people who have side effects of medication are the ones who read up on them, then expect them to happen. How true this is I don't know.x
Thanks for your reply. I didn’t even connect my body pain to the statin. It was after having a routine blood test I was told it was affecting my bones so I was taken off it. I have mainly seen people here on atorvaststin. I fill speak to my doctor about both.
Sorry if you thought I was having a go at you.I just meant listen to the medical profession and not people on here who mean well but are not really qualified.Good luck what ever you decide.x
Hello
I am on Atorvastatin started on 80mg but was getting some aches that I could not tolerate so went down to 40mg and have been fine as well as it has kept my Cholesterol down
I also suffer with Fibromyalgia which is pain in the joints and body and I can still tolerate the 40mg of Atorvastatin
Hope you will make the right choice what to do for you x
You haven't said why you need to take statins, although the assumption is that your total cholesterol count is above the recommended limit and /or the LDL/non LDL ratio is not what it should be, or you have had a heart 'incident'. And you haven't said why you are resisting statins, although the assumption can only be you are concerned about side effects concerning your bones. That aside I have taken Atorvastatin for nearly 25 years and have been on 80mg for the last five years since my NSTEMI and have no noticeable side effects. I suggest that if your GP has given you good reason to take statins to reduce your heart health risk you restart, but ensure that your situation is properly monitored to establish you have no serious side effects arising.
I dilated cardiomyopathy and stage 2-3 heart failure I have recently been diagnosed without me being told by cardiologist that I now have severe pulmonary hypertension. My recent blood test showed my cholesterol as gone up from 4 to now 5. I have been a bit low over the past few years and have been munching crisps. I have now stopped. I have previously, as I said befor, been taken off of simvastatin by cardiologist because blood test showed it was affecting my bones. That was 10 yrs ago. I was in severe pain but put it down to being 52 and aging.
I was on 80mg of Avorastatin but it was reduced to 20mg because my liver readings were very high. The night time bone and pack pain was much improved too. I sleep through the night now.
Hi, I am on 20mg Arvostation too. My ALT liver reading is over double what it should be. I was on 40mg Atorvastatin and asked for it to be reduced. My ALT has come down very slightly since the reduced Arvostation, but is hovering at about 60 still. I have RA, and one of my other meds (Tocilizumab injection) can also increase my ALT reading, but I can't change that one.
I was diagnosed with cholesterol of 7.5 30 years ago. I lost a stone and cut down all saturated fats. I got my cholesterol down to 6,5 and because my BMI is only 23 they didn't put me on statins. 10 years later they decided that it would be a good idea, even though my BMI was still 23. I was on simvastatin until this year when a new pharmacist recommended changing to atorvastatin. I've not had any noticeable side effects on either. I believe they recommend atorvastatin over simvastatin as a matter of course these days
Thanks for your reply. I think they are recommending statins as part of a cocktail of drugs I have to take for heart failure. My cholesterol as risen so they’re trying to coax me into taking it. I just want to find out what the most popular one is for me to try.
I am on Atorvastatin 80mg. I have loads of aches and pains, especially the legs that wake me up and keep me awake at night.
I would disagree with what Ravaging's doctor friend said as in my case I didn't know what to expect and never had any expectations being new to the meds but was surprised to start getting the aches and pains. Everyone is different with any medication. I put up with it at the moment because I know that they are helping to lower my cholesterol and I cannot be sure that the statins are causing this, but these and 2.5mg Ramipril are the only meds that I take before going to bed so it's a bit of a trade off.
thanks for the reply Becdan. I was on a med before which gave me awful cramps but didn’t realise it was the med causing it until it was stopped because I began taking Entresto. My body reacts to a lot of medications. I usually look up the medications given to me are the same as what the doctor says. I don’t even read the leaflets. Now I’m on a cocktail of drugs I don’t bother questioning except statin because I’ve been there before.
