Med Side effects

Phoned my Cardiologist Dept today because I've been struggling with, what I think might be, the side effects of the cocktail of meds I was placed on following the HA in November. Main concern is Bisoprolol and low HR but have also have digestive issues as well. Have to say we seem to be really lucky here with follow up care.

Spoke with one of the nurse practioners who was really helpful. She said my cardiologist wasn't in today but she would phone him and get back to me. True to her word she phoned back and I have an appt clinic with cardiologist on Wednesday morning so he can go through all my meds with me.

Yed bisoprolol will slow the heart alright. When they put my dose up to 3.75, my heart rate dropped down to around 35bpm! The nurse was gobsmacked and immediately told me to go back on 2.5 which eventually sorted itself out. These things need monitoring properly. ie do it yourself!! Otherwise a 6 monthly check up wont pick up most of the things thats going on in our bodies. A one off blood pressure check and a pulse check every 6 months is not very accurate or acceptable in my eyes.

Totally agree with you if I am not monitoring my Bp and heart rate I don’t know where I would be. My heart rate was hitting the forties with no side effects on bisoprosol so how can someone who doesn’t log there own Bp and heart rate tell.

I keep track of both HR and BP at home which gives me the historical information ready for discussion with DR tomorrow. Interestingly when my HR was checked pre exercise at rehab this morning it was down to 43 which was handy ready for tomorrow.

Hello A cardiologist appointment within 2 days wow.

Bisoprolol is a great medication just takes a little time to sort out dose. I take 7.5mg without any real problems I think a lot depends on how your heart is. Mine is only 75% functioning ie 25% is beyond repair. My EF is 38% and my heart copes with 7.5mg Bisoprolol.

This Medication is prescribed to make you feel better not to make you ill.

Totally agree but my HR is very low at times and possibly giving me problems. Rehab nurse was surprised how low it was this morning and as it makes me so fatigued thinks they may well stop it. My heart is in pretty good nick apparently with EF in normal range. I was on atenolol around 20 years ago to treat high BP, that was stopped because of low HR.

Chatting with others at rehab this morning we all recognise how fortunate we are with the follow up care we get here. I was pleasantly surprised to get an appt so quickly.

My cardiologist is working on same lines it’s sounds. I’m on multiple meds for numerous health problems and he wrote to my GP to tell him to stop over half of them because they could be causing abnormal ecg. Only problem it’s 1st one that has shown on any of the multiple ecg I’ve had.

So now got to wait a month to see if there is any ( which have only shown up in 20 years. )

Don’t hold out on them , so have to suffer from other problems until one shows up.

If u check USA medical sites they r 1st to bring up problems with meds and what effects on conditions.

I had the same problems after my HA and over 6 months I ended up having every single tablet changed. Ticagrelor caused breathing problems and awful stomach pain; bisopralol made me so exhausted I couldn't even get out of the chair; another one gave me hallucinations. Even aspirin was changed to a coated one because it played havoc with my stomach and my statin was also changed. You are extremely lucky to get such a quick appointment. It took months for my GP to work out which was causing what and change them. There are plenty of alternatives.

I had similar issues with 5 mg bisoprolol and low heart rate. Drs wouldn’t listen to me so I split it now and just take 2.5 mg

Ironically I now think it’s working against my arthritis meds ( methotrexate) and today and a bit breathless at times.

Hi HrtyI had a heart attack in February 2020, and have been taking 5 different meds every day since. These include Lansoprazole 15mg once am (half an hour before breakfast), Aspirin 75mg once am (after breakfast), Bisoprolol 1.25mg once am (after breakfast), Atorvaststin 80mg once pm, Ramipril 1.25mg. I did have problems with silent reflux and was using non prescription Gavascon Advance to try to control this until my GP doubled my dose of Lansoprazole so I now take the same dose in the evening (before I go to bed) with my other pm meds.
