Clopidegrol or Ticagrelor

I have asked my GP to review my medication since my HA and stent op in Sept 2022. I am on the usual Asprin Ramipril Ticagrelor Bisoprolol Atorvastatin. I have been getting burning arm pains since then. He only suggested changing Ticagrelor to Clopidegrol. I am really in confused state as to whether to swap from Ticagrelor to Clopidegrol.

Hello :-)

I am on a cocktail of medications as so many of us are

I was also on ticagrelor but was able to come of it eventually as after heart attacks that is the standard amount of time you are on it about a year sometimes a bit longer

It is very hard to work out when you take a few meds which is causing what as they can all give side effects for some

The main one I was told ticagrelor caused was to make your breathing sometimes a little worse and for some that can feel better when they come of it

I suppose you could try the other med they both do the same and if things do not improve or the other one makes you feel worse you can always go back to ticagrelor but we are all different in how we react to side effects so worth a try to see if it suites you better :-)

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Thank you for your response. I suppose Clopidegrol you only take once a day whereas Ticagrelor you take twice. But the GP really didn't give me a real response as to the cause of the pains. He suggested giving me some nerve pain tablets which I refused as I am taking enough drugs my body can cope with.I have been reassured its not heart related which is a comfort.

Hello :-)

When I was on tiagrelor I only had to take it once a day but I suppose it can vary

I totally understand you not wanting yet another medication I feel exactly the same as you my body feels it just cannot tolerate one more

Sometimes rather than getting to the cause Doctors do seem at times to just try and throw more medications at you which I find really frustrating

I think I may try the other med and see if there is any improvement then you can at least write of if tiagrelor was the cause or not

If you do give it a go let us know how you get on :-) x

For me it is no contest. Generally I get along with most of my medication and was put on Clopidogrel in earl 2017 following a stroke, I was okay with it and remained on it even after my bypass (also 2017)

In October 2021 I had 2 stents fitted and was put on Ticagrelor 1 x morning and 1 x evening plus aspirin. I was told to take it for a year then I could go back to Clopidogrel.

I had terrible side effects, I would be gasping for breath and would sometimes wake up at night with a totally dry mouth where I had obviously been panting and gasping for breath in my sleep.

After 6 months I took myself off Ticagrelor and aspirin and put myself back onto Clopidogrel while I waited for a call from my GP, I just couldn't stand the gasping for air.

My GP was happy with the 6 months I had stayed on it and changed my prescription.

I am not aware of any side effects that Clopidogrel had on my while Ticagrelor not only made me short of breath but I came out in very bad bruises.

We can all react differently to the same medication, I know on here some people have said they cannot take Clopidogrel but have no problem with Ticagrelor, I think it can be a matter of trial and error.

Thanks for your view on Clopidegrol. I took it yesterday for first time and had headache and some burning as well. I think I will go back Ticagrelor today as I have been in them since July 2022. I suppose the body has got use to it. All the best
