AF after bypass

hi all, you have all been so helpful. Since my uncles bypass, aneurysm repair and vale. He now has the pacemaker.

today we had a call the hospital picked up atrial fibrillation in his check up and his abdomen pain has been put down to digest system pushing up. A hiatus hernia I think it’s called. Is this normal things after such big surgery? Stomach pain he’s had for years

Hello :-)

I am not sure that these operations can cause things like a hiatus hernia which is right by the way :-)

But I suppose as you say your Uncle has always suffered with stomach pains if we have any underlying conditions the operations could flare them up a little and the positive is that we get more tests done after these ops if we have any symptoms which can get a diagnosis sometimes for other things

A hiatus hernia can be quite common and treatable so it is a good thing they have found the cause or believe this is the cause as now they can treat it

He will be fine :-) x

yeah I think he had it before, apparently it’s common with age. I could clearly see it on his X-ray.

The atrial fibrillation surprised us, I’ve read it’s common after bypass surgery. Scared my uncle a little. He does have a pacemaker.

I think the surgery is definitely a journey, on Monday he’s 10 weeks since and with what he had done I think he’s doing well. He gets down days when he feels slight pain. Surgeon is happy saw him this week. As a family we’ve tried to pull together, I feel lucky he’s had this surgery and got extra time with him. Emotionally it’s been tough, anniversary of my fathers death is coming up and feel I’m more protective of uncle

Hello :-)

Yes I think he will have had it before and you are right it is something with age that a lot seem to get but can be managed which is the positive

10 weeks already he is doing really well and I still get some aches and pains now and 17 months on even though they don't bother me and if you think about what they do when they do this op there is no wonder the discomfort for some can last a while

I am so sorry the Anniversary of your Dad is coming up , I know how that feels and it does not matter how long it has been it can still hurt so much

Your Dad though will be looking down on you , so proud of the women you have become and the way you are caring along with the family for your Uncle :-)

Spring will be here soon and you can all get out together that is something to look forward to :-) x

thank you and so grateful for your kind words. My dad thought a lot of my uncle and treated him as a brother, even tho they were in laws. My uncle was already living with my mum when my parents met. Dad supported him a lot especially with my uncles difficulties.

It’s amazed me what the surgeons have done and how he is recovering. He’s not good socially but looking forward to get him out walking more. It’s a shame he hates being around people otherwise he could watch me play cricket in the summer. I’m sure he’ll help me train tho
