Hello :-)

If I remember you were really low on vitamin D so they have put you on a high dose to gibe you a boost and to get the levels up again which is important

A few years ago I was in the same position and the high dose gave me stomach ache as well as joint pains but I stick with it and then after I just take a lower dose now to maintain my levels which gives me no side effects and does the trick

If this is just a short course you have to take I would see if I could tolerate it but if you can't then you need to tell them they might agree to lower the strength

I hope you feel better soon :-) x

That is a huge dose. Were you prescribed it? If not, you need to have a word with your GP or pharmacist.

Agree with RufusScamp - 20,000 iu is a massive dose and could potentially cause these side effects as it can affect your calcium levels. I would speak with your GP as soon as possible. Generally what’s considered safe is 4,000 iu or less a day, so taking this level twice a week is way above this which may be appropriate for you but I’d definitely suggest seeking advice soonest especially with these symptoms.

Have you been told to take vitamin D? My cardiologist told me, only a few weeks ago, I should not take it unless my GP tells me to. It interferes with numerous other drugs amd definitely could be causing you issues. I suggest you stop and then arrange for a blood test to see if amd what does you need.

Wow, 20,000IU... as others have said, that is a huge dose and surely it cannot be good for your body. I take 2000IU daily to bolster my immune system during the winter, so 14000IU over the week and I consider this to be a fairly high dose. I wouldn't want to take any more.

Hi I was prescribed by my gp my vit d reading was 32 she also said wouldn't interact with heart meds and to take for 7 weeks I think I should email gp and will pop up to pharmacist tomorrow Thank very much

The NHS website advises a maximum of 4000IU per day. Taken daily that would give you 28,000IU per week as opposed to 40,000IU which seems to be a more sensible approach. 32nmol/L is at the low end of the range, 50nmol/L being considered adequate for most, so you've not that far to go to get into the acceptable range. I would ask, what's the rush?

In all honesty, there isn't a single doctor or specialist on the entire planet that would or could be able to convince me to take 20k iu vitamin d tablets, no matter what the reason. I think that you really should talk with you GP about why there's a recommendation of such a drastic amount for 7 weeks, and possibly consider a 2nd opinion if the answer isn't satisfactory

Some years ago my Vit D was so low it couldn't be recorded at all. My GP prescribed huge doses. I still have the empty box so I just checked the dosage. I was given 20,000 IU tablets to take 3 times a week for 5 weeks followed by one a month for a year. So your dosage is correct. Fortunately I had no ill effects from it and it made a huge welcome improvement to my general heath and muscular problems.. As you are having problems you should check with your GP

I've had low viteman D and I was prescribed 40,000 IU to take one a week and they recommend that I get it at my local pharmacy after I'd finished my prescription. I only recently started taking a I think bout 2000 IU a day as I've heard it's the best thing to do over the winter it's not making the slightest bit of difference if anything making me feel worse. Does viteman D effect calcium channel blockers?.

Hope you get your viteman D sorted take care.
