there’s a lot of advice out there at the moment. I go out as much as possible and like to go for an early morning swim. but when it’s really cold my chest hurts. I read somewhere that cold makes your blood thicker so not good for those of us who need to take blood thinners. I’ve decided that I should just keep warm inside until the weather improves. My arthritis is also bad at the moment so my swim can wait now till the new year.

Dear Coopergirl52

I have found that putting on a mask again really helped my chest these cold mornings by pre-heating the air as you breath in.

Im sure that a scarf would do the same job and look a lot smarter than looking like a deranged Dr out for a morning stroll like I do.

I am bald { shaved } so I also have an electronic hand warmer in my woolly hat ! it works !

Do whatever you feel you can do at your own pace, just make sure you are warm, if in doubt put yet another layer on and come and join us in the cold crisp beautiful life.

If I see steam rising from your hat I will know why !

Take care

Any suggestions keeping g your hands warm I've got 100% wool gloves but over the last couple of days the tips of my fingers on both hands down to the first knuckle have been absolute agony and red even with gloves on

sheepskin mitts; awkward to use but VERY warm

A pair of wool gloves and a pair of leather or sheepskin.

Depends on the individual. Cold doesn't affect me at all.

Try mittens they are warmer than gloves. As for breathing cold air I wear a snood and pull it over my mouth.Just get out and move you'll feel a lot better for it.x

Wear a hat, glove and warm socks. Keep extremities warm. Statistically this reduces the incidence of cardiovascular incidents during cold weather.

Good morning I wear hat gloves and layers. Also use hand warmers in my gloves. Made by Hot hands. When hands are nice and warm I put them I my pocket, lasts for 10 hours. Well worth £1. Have a good day and stay warm x

Stay warm! Blood congeals when you gets cold, so if you're out and about wrap up well and keep well nourished.

Yes, wrap up warm especially extremities so gloves hat and thick socks and warm boots with a GOOD tread.A scarf or snood might be useful. Best to layer so a vest might be useful and can I recommend fleece lined trousers such as you can get from 'Chums' Or Clifford James. I also have a fleece lined shirt for colder days so I can mix and match according to weather. A cold easterly will need several layers of clothes

Damart's thermolactyl underwear is good but quite expensive

Definitely keep warm ,layers are better than one thick jumper so vest or camisole / T-shirt / jumper / coat . As others have said Hats, scarves and warm boots.

I understand that statistically three things are synonymous with many heart attacks, early morning, a heavy meal and very cold weather.....so don't go clearing the snow from the drive after a hearty breakfast!

Oh, and keep moving, a sedentary lifestyle is not good for circulation, and it does help to keep you warm. Keep it within limits of course, just try to increase your heart rate gently for a few minutes a couple of times every day. My resting heart rate is 45, I do a few exercises and get it up to about 90 every day for 5-10 minutes or so, check with your doc first of course, but that's what I was advised to do in post heart attack rehab, but we all have different issues.

Good luck

Call me old fashioned, but the thermal underwear originally bought for outdoor socials during covid lockdown are proving invaluable. I'm like a well insulated penguin - merino wool long-johns, two thermal vests, thick jeans, 2 jumpers, coat and a Faroese hat and scarf. And mittens!

Oh, and thanks for all the info on this link. I'm new to this - diagnosed with AF a few weeks ago and didn't know about the impact of cold weather on blood. Will take extra care.

The cold is not good for anyone on blood thinners as it does just the opposite. Stay warm and safe

just to say I don’t think any questions are silly. If you’re concerned about something then ask which in my opinion is one of the reasons this forum is here. The people on here are very knowledgeable and supportive.

The important thing to remember is that your heart has to work harder in extreme temperatures - it is the pump for your central heating and cooling system which keeps your body at the correct working temperature - so y to u need to do whatever you can in cold weather to insulate your body and help your heart do its job - in some cases that also means avoiding vigorous activity, so think carefully about what you plan to do
