rosuvastatin.

Hello again. Having had horrible side effects on atorvastatin and simvastatin, the stroke consultant wants me to try rosuvastatin 5mg 3 times a week.

Has anyone any experience of this statin as an intermittent dose ?

Doc and consultant just do not want to give up on the statins… thanks.

Hello :-)

I am sorry that you are struggling with the statins but they must feel it is important you take them and what suites one does not always suite another and even though I am not on the one's you are now going to try let's hope it is 3rd time lucky

Hopefully as you are taking them three times a week you will be able to tolerate them better

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Tried the rest and could not tolerate them ,endo started me very slowly on rosuvastin and can now manage 5 days a week so give it a go .Best advice from endo was start with 1 a week for two weeks then two a week etc and if you get probs just go back to last tolerated dose for a while

wow. Brilliant idea! Will suggest that to my doc once he’s back from holiday. At the moment I am on porridge every morning, handful of almonds midday and a plant stanol drink in the evening. My cholesterol is 4.5 and ldl is 2.5…I didn’t think that was bad but they want it right down as I have plaque in my carotid artery..hey ho!

Hello, that’s also really helpful advice for me too, I struggle with the statin so I think your idea is great. I have been taking one every other day and some days the muscle weakness is worse than others, so I will cut back again and try to increase when I can. I have tried 3 statins altogether and the Rosuvastatin seems to be the one I can tolerate. I have tried simvastatin and atorvastatin and the side effects were tough. If any other hearties have found one which has the least side effects please let me know. Many thanks, Judi

Oh. Thank you for the information Heartifact. That would be important for me then as they think that is what caused the tia..plaque from my carotid.

I will have to try the new tablet as the consultant suggested ..plus the suggestion from megnaben.

Hi Sailalong. I take rosuvastatin every day, and it hasn't seemed to give me any problems, but I know many people say statins give them muscle aches and pains. I hope you find it helpful and can tolerate it.

I felt I was being badly affected by statins and my GP told me to come off them for a couple of weeks, then take one a week, then two and gradually increase until I found my tolerance point. He said even one a week was better than none. Made sense to me.

I’m now on Rosuvastatin daily and don’t think it affects me badly.

Hi,

I started on Rosuvastatin as my mum ended up with elevated CK and muscle cramping on atorvastatin, and I inherited my high cholesterol from her.

I started on 10 mg/day, then ramped it up 5 mg at a time every month. I had slight gastro issues every time I increased the dose, now I am on 40 mg/day with no issues.

Stains have a 24 h half-life, so alternate day dosing is a great option with all the benefits of a statin.

My husband takes 10mg every night without any problems. Hopefully you will be able to tolerate the intermittent dose. Best to take this in the evening.

I take 10mg a day without any issues. When I first started taking it I had bad headaches which lasted a week but I also started taking Felodipine at the same time so it could have been that. Either way, they lasted a week and no other side effects since.

HI Sailalong!

I was put on Atorvastatin some years ago when i wwas diagnosed with diabetes. Couldnt tolerate them at all and had terrible muscle pains in my legs. My cholesterol was around 2 at the time and the doctor agreed i could come off them. Big mistake! Unfortunately i seemed to slip through the net and now 8 years later my cholesterol was 6.6 and i habe coronery artery disease requiting bypass surgery. I was immediately put on Rosuvastatin 2.5mg, my cardiologist but up to 5mg straight away then increased to 10mg within a few weeks. Ive not had a single issue on thos statin. Ive yet to have any bloods showing if my cholesterol has gone down but im sure it must be doing some good! Good luck, definitely worth a try i would say.

Hi there just about to go on this statin how did it go for you did it lower your levels ? Thanks

Sljp0000 profile image
Sljp0000 in reply to Davidc1075

Hi!I take it you're asking about Rosuvastatin? It took my levels from 6.6 to 4.5. I personally don't think this is low enough still but my GP and Cardiologist are happy. I don't know the break down of good fat to bad so maybe my HDL is a decent junk of that!

Hope you get on ok with it!

Now on Rosuvastatin 5mg what were you prescribed to get your levels down ? Thanks

I'm on 10mg. It takes a good few months to see the results. I suggest you ask for your cholesterol to be tested in 3 months to see if 5mgs is working for you.Susie

I was eventually changed to 5mg rosuvastatin as some days I could barely walk. Within a couple of weeks the only muscle pain left was in upper arms. I wasn't awareit didnt necessarily need to be taken daily and will bring that up when I speak to GP later in the.

I take Rosuvastatin 5mg every other day with no side effects, as a result my total chloresterol plummeted from 6 to 3.3.

I too could not tolerate simvastatin and the others -all gave me dreadful cramps. I was put on on 5mg Rosuvastatin daily with additional Ezetimibe post CABG x2. All good. Good luck😊

I couldn’t take statins so I’m on ezetimibe and Repatha injection. The Repatha is hospital only through the lipid clinic. I have very high lipoprotein (a) which is how I ended up at the lipid clinic.

I could not tolerate Atorvastatin, Simvastatin or Pravastatin, so my GP put me on Ezetimibe which did nothing on its own. The pathologist at the local hospital persuaded me to try Rosuvastatin at 10mg on alternate days. Initially I had a headache with this, so I cut the pill in half and tried that, moving on to 5mg daily after a few days, then to 10mg on alternate days as prescribed. My cholesterol had increased last year, so I asked my GP if I could take it daily which was agreed. I had no issues with the increase and it lowered my cholesterol back to where it was. I expect in time I may need to have the dose increased. Overall Rosuvastatin gets a thumbs up from me.

Hi Sailalong. Statins unfortunately can be an issue for some,

After a quad bypass 3+yrs ago I'm currently and happily taking 20mg rosuvastatin once per day 7 days a week, this is after being on 2 previous types (which included 80mg atorvastatin) which gave me so many aches and pains. I was advised at the time by my GP and cardiologist that some statins can lead to certain issues (as can a lot of meds) and that they may need to be switched round until a suitable one can be found, which turned out to be the case. I would say similar to others in so much as they're seeking you to take a statin for certain reasons and so I'd to try and stick with it (even though it can seem to be a bit of trail and error) until you find a statin that suits you.

Wishing you best health and take care.

My cardio put my atorvastatin up from 10mg to 40 mg when I developed some troubling bouts of arrythmia. A private hospital emergency room cardio had responded to my check in by prescribing 40 mg of amiodorone which seemed highly toxic and had left me exhausted.

My regular cardio's response of the higher atorvastatin dose was equally worrying - muscle pains and only slightly less exhaustion.

His next gambit was to reduce the atorvastin down to 10mg, add 10 mg of ezetimibe and double my bisoprolol dose from 2.5 to 5mg. All per day doses.

Seems to have worked. No muscle pain and much reduced tiredness after 3 months of the new regime. Worrisome arrythmias have also retreated. I gather that cardios are increasingly turning to a combo of ezetimibe and regular statin for those that can't tolerate higher doses of statins alone.

I still break wind a fair bit at night/morning, even on just 10mg of statin though!

I could not tolerate statins for horrible cramps every night until my endocrinologist put me on Repatha injections, which I do every two weeks at home and no problems.

Hi, I've been on 20mg Rosuvastatin daily for roughly 10 years post CABG.

I've also just been put on 10mg Ezetimibe as well since my Aortic valve replacement last year, I do cramp up now and again but its a small price to pay. No other side effects that I know of or maybe I've just got used to them.
