weight gain
Hello
Weight gain is a side effect with these meds and I have put weight on to taking them my Husband was on them once and he was forever hungry and would get like low sugar level drops when taking them and had to eat
When he came of them he was fine again
I am now considering after speaking with my GP coming of them and she has found an alternative one if I want to swap
Talk with your GP there might me something else you could take instead x
After years of stable weight, I put on two stone since starting Bisoprolol. It is taking some shifting. I also feel very tired around the middIe of the day will try and get some alternative from my GP.
I’ve had the same experience. I’ve just had my bisoprolol reduced from 10mg to 7.5 to see if that helps. I’m hoping to reduce it further or see if there is an alternative. I’ve just started entresto and Dapagliflozin so I think they are reluctant to swap the bisoprolol at the moment until I’m settled on the new stuff. I’m lucky that I haven’t seen weight gain on bisoprolol but the fatigue is awful. I have to weigh myself daily and I’m fairly stable. I could sleep all day though and feel like I’m a zombie. My brain has definitely slowed down and I’m nowhere near as sharp as I was a year ago. It’s hard to tell if it’s my health problems causing it or the bisoprolol or both. A cardiologist told me it was likely the bisoprolol but at the time I felt that the benefits outweighed the side effects. I’m struggling to believe that now. Best wishes.
I put two stone on as well I’m on 10mg of bisoprolol, I feel okish , I do however go to bed at 7 pm every night not to sleep more so to read and just rest .
Same here. I have stopped taking themnow after 18 months. I feel a lot better now. Having said that, I was on a low dose.
Wow! I didn’t realise weight gain was a side effect. I’ve put on a stone or so and am really struggling to take it off. Eating less, exercising… thanks Lavender for highlighting this!
Been on 2.5 mg Bisoprolol for a year now and put on 2 stone! Always hungry, are they the culprit 😩
I put on 1.5 stone after my HA. I changed the Biso to Carvedilol, but that didn't make any difference. Interestingly, I stopped taking my 40mg Atorvastatin (with the agreement, if not approval, of my GP), and lost 12lbs. I'm now on 5mg Rosuvastatin twice a week.
I got mine swapped. IT dropped my BP far too low and I just slept all day. Wasn't on it long enough to gain weight but GP was happy to change it.
I think the fact that the medication slows everything down is the main problem. Not feeling like doing much and so not exercising enough is bound to affect the weight.
I was initially on 3.75mg Bisoprolol, but got it reduced as it lowered my heart rate too much and I wanted to pass out when I stood up. My GP wanted to increase the dose going on about the benefits for heart patients (he hadn't got his ears switched on), but thankfully a meeting with the practice pharmacist got it reduced to 1.25mg which still does make me light-headed at times. No problem with my weight at this dosage.
Yes. Likewise. Dreadful drug and as far as I’m concerned the side effects don’t make the benefit worthwhile. I’m alive post h/attack and stent - yay. My subsequent quality of life on Bisoprolol was so poor I really could not see why it was worthwhile and I subsequently refused to take it when a second stent was required! I’m not totally convinced our fabulous NHS got that nonsense correct though, having initially sent me home and not provided the angiogram they originally suggested. That’s another story.
So, several months of misery later I finally agreed an alternative regime which seems to work for me. One size does not fit all!
I suggest a meaningful chat with your cardio / gp and tell them you are not reacting well to it.
My comments are not, obviously, advice. Merely my personal experience. Consult your medical experts.
I’m still struggling to shift the weight gain - two years on. But at least I can now actually do the things I enjoy and they help with weight of course
Best wishes. Hopefully you’ll do better.
We must be the oddity, but I seem to always be a mystery with all my health .I am only on 2.5mg but have lost nearly a stone in weight in 3 months since my MI .
This I admit is partly to do with lifestyle changes.
Improved diet and portion control . Also more cardiac exercise .
My husband takes 5mg and had put on lots of weight but again had made life changes .
With the changes we’ve both made he’s lost 2 stone in 3 months .
So don’t accept you have to put weight on . Speak to you GP , cardiac team and ask for support.
Good luck with getting support and future health .
