Good morning everyone. I have been referred for steriod injections due to chronic back pain and just wondering if anyone else has had this treatment whilst on the usual heart meds. Ie Ticagrelor, Aspirin, Atorvastin?

Steroid injections and heart meds
Hello! You need to discuss this with your medical team. With combined Ticagrelor (an anti-platelet therapy) and Aspirin therapy there will be a significantly increased risk of bleeding.
Hello
I had a triple Bypass about11 months ago and am on heart meds not the same one's as you except for Aspirin but still I think they all do more or less the same whichever ones you take
I was on Ticagrelor but have been of that now a few months
I have a very painful shoulder that has been in need of a steroid injection over a year but because of my Bypass surgery I have had to wait till now before they would give it me which I will get this month hopefully
I got the impression it was nothing to do with the meds I was taking why I have had to wait but to do with my Bypasses healing for a better way to put it
So I will be having a steroid injection taking heart meds but the best thing to do is just ask they should have your notes and see what you are taking and why but just give them a gentle reminder and if they say it is ok then it will be and I hope you will be pain free soon x
Hi Heartifact. This is really good to hear thank you 👍
I was offered steroid injections for a painful shoulder, but my doctor explained that steroids don't actually fix the underlying problem they simply reduce the pain (and not always that). There's also a strict limit of two injections (I don't know if this is standard, or because like you I'm a heart patient). Anyhow, on the basis that I'd rather keep my powder dry in case of a more serious problem I declined the steroid treatment. Sure enough, within a few weeks the problem cleared up by itself and I was back in the gym.
Good luck!
Thank you for this detailed response. Makes sense. Fingers crossed it works for me x
Hi! I had a steroid injection into my hip whilst taking most of the tabs you are on without any problems. The only one is added is the Tricagrelor which has an increased risk of bleeding.Im sure you will be telling them about them all anyway. Good luck! Hope it helps 🙂
Hi,
I’ve had steroids injected into wrists, hands, knee (x5) and shoulder (x2) with my last knee injection at the end of May 6 weeks after a cardiac arrest.
Just make sure the consultant is aware of all your meds, I take aspirin, ramipril, bisoprolol & lansoprazole, there’s always a risk so weigh it up against the back problem, I’ve never had a bleeding issue and I’ve been on aspirin for 22 years.
I don’t hesitate as for me they help.
Hi, I saw an orthopaedic consultant privately for advice about 6 months ago and was diagnosed with degenerate arthritis and scoliosis of the spine. The hip and back pain had got worse as since the heart medications I couldn’t take brufen. I’m on the usual cocktail including blood thinners and anti platelets. He said about steroid injections ( this is a degenerative problem so they won’t cure it), but he won’t come near me because of the blood thinners and anti platelets. The concern is that they increase the risks of bleeding into the tissue or joint injected which can cause more damage and problems than there worth. He also said with your back and hips it’s often a number of areas that need injecting as it’s hard to identify a single one causing the symptoms. The more injections increasing the risks. So he declined my money.
So I swim and do other exercise. The pain goes through episodes so at times it’s better than others. I use paracetamol, a trickle of codiene and magnesium - both tablets and body spray for pain. When the pain gets worse I’ll push down the NHS route about the injections but at the moment because I’m managing the pain myself the risks of the injections outweigh the benefits, but when that balance is reversed- which at some point it will be I’ll re- visit the steroid injections again. Nothing is risk free in life you have to weigh up what your balance is.
Hi Ewloe. Thanks for your reply. This is a little concerning regarding the advice from your orthopaedic consultant. I will do a little bit more research before going ahead. To be honest I have suffered this pain for such a long time it would just be good to have some relief however temporary. I do exercise every day plus sometimes very occasionally I take cocodamol but I dont like the way it makes me feel. Thanks again
Yes, I have had two steroid injections for bursitis. No problems. (I'm on maximum therapy for heart failure - Candesartan, Bisoprolol, Spironolactone, Aspirin, Rosuvastatin)
I have these in my knees about 3 times a year. Never been a problem with heart meds
You need medical advice on this. I was given a steroid injection years ago before my heart attack and it made me violently ill. I threw up for 4 weeks and had to have tablets to stop the vomiting. It's a known side effect of that particular one which would badly affect absorption of your medication. Not everyone is affected though so please get a GP's advice.
Hi. Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear you have had a bad experience. Anyone I know who has had pain injections has been positive about the pain relief. I only needed to know about any interaction with my meds before going ahead
I Just wanted to make you aware that there can be a possible reaction which would affect how your meds worked rather than an interaction. I'm glad those you know have been fine. Unfortunately I just brought up all my meds almost as soon as I'd taken them. It's not a common occurrence but they are told to keep you at thehospital for around half an hour to make sure there is no reaction. If there is,hen there's an alternative they can use.
Hi Liz, I’m on Bisoprolol and Aspirin following an AVR 3 years ago and during lockdown was diagnosed with MS. Part of my treatment for this disease this year includes massive steroids given intravenously along with my disease modifying drugs. My neurologist only insists I don’t take Bisoprolol on the day of my infusion then back to normal dose next day. I’ve had no problems myself. I’m sure you’re going to check elsewhere for safety’s sake and I wish you the best of luck. Sue x 🙏
Gp referred me to a pain management consultant and he referred me. This was after reviewing my MRI scan
Hi liz what type of back pain is it ? Does it feel like your glutes tightening when your standing or is it more of a bone pain ?
Hi, I had a steroid injection for a frozen shoulder almost a year past (after a quad bypass 2019) and no reaction whatsoever, however I would always fully discuss with your Gp or whatever medical team is planning to carry out the injection. Good luck and hope it solves your back issues.
I have had numerous steroid injections whilst on my Atorvastatin tablets. I haven't had any adverse symptoms from them or any issues with bleeding or excessive bruising, but obviously each person is different.
Hello I’m on Atorvastin and Apixaban. Blood thinner. I’ve had 2 steroid injections. One last year in hip. Other a few weeks ago for shoulder. No problem at all. It’s just the same as having blood tests. I’m sure you will be fine.
